-Bad AM reception is usually the head unit or the antenna. Have you looked at them and checked the connections. Antennas go bad sometimes.
-If you replace the head unit with the same factory model the changer will work fine. If you replace the HU with an aftermarket like Alpine the changer will not work with it. This is assuming that you have factory changer.

I know that you said AM radio reception is poor, but it is the FM cable that causes the problem. I have done this repair about 25 times already at the dealership. Buy an aftermarket cable (good quality, 15ft, $20-$50 maybe), then run it straight from the radio to the antena assembly. I'm pretty sure that is your problem. Hope this helps! Let us know.
