thanks for the input--all of which is for the more technical user looking to compete and reach certain sound levels. i have heard the velo in a sealed enclosure (fantastic) and the dynaudio freeair in a mercedes (which i was not impressed with at all) again, what im saying is the BEST FREEAIR sub is the JL 10IB4. WE ARE TALKING FRE AIR HERE. I HAVE HEARD THEM ALL. There is no contest--the subs you mention ARE NOT FOR FREEAIR USE, and even if you use them free air, they sound like crap in sealed enclosures when put into the GS trunk. Not saying they sound like crap in a sealed box--just not ideal for the GS. An acquaintence has spent $5000+ on his mercedes system and regrets it becuase of the rattling, etc. This is a Luxury car, not an impala--and quality "scalable" bass that "fits" is important. The JL does wonders that others can not. Other subs will either go way under or way over the limit--the JL is ideal for the GS.
As far as what i've heard--I have experienced many of the high end subs you've mentioned, but more importantly HAVE done my homework by directly speaking with all manufacturers who specify FREE AIR on their subs, many pro installers, and the techincal people who make the subs and have suggested what to use and what not to use and why. By the way more than one rep from Dyna said their sub was not best suited for the GS freeair apllication. They did suggest sealed enclosure though. IMO, the Velo or the Dyna are a waste of money FOR THE FREEAIR IN A GS (not for a sealed setup elsewhere) AGAIN< THINK FREEAIR and the GS acoustics. As for the plate mounting, a kindergarten kid could do this--I would not call it an alteration or a modification. It either is a direct swap or a very minor addition of the sub screwed into a new plate. Still, I would have it professionally done for those that have not installed before-

Absolutely wrong on the Velodyne. The Vel can be changed for free air use due to the controller. Suspension compliance also changes - it's one very flexible subwoofer!
As for the Dyns, who did you talk to? Dyn directly? Dynaudio is only about 20 minutes away from me and the story differesdepending on who you spoke to...

>Qts on the MW190 says otherwise, but they're may be other >woofers you all are talking about...
I agree. The specs say they are suitable for free air use. The Dynaudio datasheet says so too. I've heard the larger Dynaudio woofers in their hifi speakers. I was not impressed (sorry Percy).

No prob! In your listening session with the Dyn, what did you feel was wrong with it's presentation?
Percy
I've done some checking and what I listened to was not a current model and didn't use the current drivers. Dynaudio did a system some time back with 2 x 12 inch woofers and, I think, two dome midranges. The bass was really flabby and bloated.
It struck me at the time because Dynaudio gear had always been excellent, if expensive, and this was their top-of-the-line system.
I think the drivers were called 12W300 or something similar. Do you know the system I mean?

Dyn has had several incarnations of their car audio speakers within the past few years. The 12W300 (don't know the real model designation) was probably a set of home drivers mounted the car. I know they were messing around with home speakers for a while there until the company dumped literally millions of dollars into redesigning everything for the automotive enviroment.
So, I'm not surprised. The newer stuff sound MUCH better.
