Subwoofer Upgrade
Liazon it just depends what you want. If you drop in a free air sub you will get louder and more accurate bass. You really need to run it off of an aftermarket amp, especially if you get the ib4 (8ohm). If you want loud, deeper bass go with the enclosed one. I like loud bass sometimes and its good to have it, even though i dont turn it up very often. Im around 145dBs right now which is louder than normal people (including me) need.
I guess to summarize, if your over 30 you probably want the free-air.

We want to keep the car as close to factory as possible. Can the ML sub-woofer be removed
and saved to put back when we sell?
Thanks,

Mylton99, you've dug up a second ancient thread for your second post.
Try an Alumapro free-air 10" to replace your stock one. You can drive it with a JL 250/1.

Look for Alchemy Free-Air.
Yes, you can save the sub and put it all back when you sell. Just don't do any major cutting. Add the new amp by using a line-level converter off of the stock amp (do a search to find more info on this).

Putting on the ghostbusting suit - where the heck is my positron collider?

there are discontinued
so what you think about the kicker solo x 10???
check out www.dlsamerica.com and look under the "Classic" line for the OA series of woofers. Those are specifically made for free-air use and I use it in my 93 LS400. Its a VERY nice upgrade vs. the crap I had in it before.
Shoot, I forgot to post here when I did my setup. Originally, the car came with a really lame Alpine deck (with a double DIN adapter kit of course) But a pretty good sub setup in a sealed hanging box, I forget the brand now, but Aqua is their signature color. Anyway, I spent the entire amount of selling all the items in the car. The deck, the changer (which was not connected), even the OEM sub. Got about $500 for it all, replaced with a JVC deck (something 8500) an alpine 450W 5 channel sub, MB Quarts up front (whatever the 2nd to the top of the lines were) and the JL sub. WoW! Just replacing the deck would have probably satisfied me if I would have known it was the deck that was not producing any bass and been happy. But I am so glad I went with the JL. I have yet to hear/feel a note it can't hit and talk about clean! I don't push it hard, but I have to say there is a LOT of sound coming from that thing with only 250W on it. Overall I havve to agree that is has to be the best sub for this car. It really does sound/feel like you have a 12" in there. Pretty rare to find one on ebay, but I did find one, paid through the nose for it too. It was almost the new price. Best thing I ever did for a car. Thanks for the info!
