I was told that I would need a 1000 watt amp to run it, it being the w6? Sound right or is that too much?
Whoever told you this needs to be run from immediately. First off, a W6 won't take 1Kw. Second, you don't need 1Kw to run that sub. It will be perfectly happy with 3-400 watts. The difference between 400 watts and 1Kw is 4.5 dB, which is barely audible if the sub could take it.
The bigger influence will be the box. If you want nice clean bass (no e ), you will likely be happy with a medium sized sealed enclosure. If you go too small, it will cut down the power handling and reduce the output a bit. A medium sized box will mediate both factors and allow you to use 400 watts effectively. I suggest listening to both to see which you prefer. I'll reserve my guess on which that will be until you get back to us.
Big Mack...i have decided to go with an 10" Alpine Type-X and a Alpine MRP1000 amp (600rms @4ohm OR 1000rms @ 2ohm) to power. I was told that the 4 ohm can be converted to a 2 ohm to accomodate the 1000rms max that the sub runs. Will that be ok?

How do you "convert" a sub to 2 ohm? Is it a dual voice coil sub? That's a ton of power to put into a 10" sub. I would caution you that you're buying far more power than you need and run the risk of cooking the sub if something is amiss.
The only way to wire that sub is 2ohm or 8ohm. Onviously he is going to run it at 2 ohm. You dont need to do anything special just follow the directions on how to position the jumper. FYI Alpine rep told me to run mine at 2 ohm in a 1-1.25 cuft sealed enclosure.

A smaller box will actually increase the subs mechanical power handling. A larger box will decrease mechanical power handling but is going to be more efficient.

It is a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub so you can either wire it in series for a final load of 8 ohm, parallel for a final load of 2 ohm, or run each coil independently for a load of 4 + 4 ohms if you have a multiple channel amp.

The sub is rated at 1kw rms power. It has a large enough voice coil with enough cooling to dissipate the heat. Also in reality if you hooked a 1kw amp to the sub and played music through it the sub would hardly ever see 1kw because of enclosure/sub impedence rise. It is better to have some head room then not enough power as people tend to push the amp past its limit to get it to "sound louder". In the process they end up sending a clipped signal to the sub which will cause it to burn up.

Mechanical, yes. Thermal, not so much. In his case, I'm concerned about the latter.

I didn't look it up. I get tired of doing that when people don't give enough information.

Whether it's rated for it or not, and even if it is, many people will still push an amp harder to get more output out of it. Once you are at the thermal limit and the mechanical limit, pushing it is going to make magic smoke. I'm well aware that a 1Kw amp rarely sends that out unless clipping, but I skipped the middle part and went with the recommendation. Fair enough.
nite lex I had 2 type x 10 in my g35 and I ran a pdx 1000.1 for both and sounded great nice hard hitting bass the Jl is a great sub but the alpine does give more boom for your buck so it up to you and the w6 goes get with the 500/1 jl amp alpine goes great with a 600/1 or 1000/1 pdx.
I have a JL 12W6v2 in a factory box hooked up to a JL Audio 500/1 amp. I love that thing and it kicks AZZ!! I would only redo my system for show, but don't need to. Money well invested! Good luck!
Good choice the recommended power to the type x is 500 - 1000 watts rms. Get a box built for your sub and you couldn't be happier! More money but well worth it!
