slight problem is that all the connectors changed in 2001 gs to strandard 2001 up lexus 20 pin connctors. they finally made all radio connctors the same over the entire lexus line. . the 98 gs has a gs only 6 and 10 pin connectors that were not standard 6 pin and 10 pin toyota. so no commercial adaptors are available. once a custom adaptor is made by using a toyota speaker $6.00 6 and and 10 pin male adaptor (available anywhere)with the wires all switched around for gs soldered to a 15.00 (pagan audio)20 pin female lexus radio plug. than any gs radio 2001 to 2005 will plug into the 98 to 2000 radio..................................................... the main advantage is of switching to 2001 gs pioneeer or mark levinson (no differwence beween the 2 radios aqfter 2000 only name on the faceplate. amps and spekaers were different not the radios) is you can hook up vaistech and some factory xm and ipod adaptors to the later gs radios unlike the 98 to 2000 which dont support xm radio song titles on the screen............................................................. any radios prior to 1998 were analog not digital so no older than 98 radios can be adapted. also all nakamichi after 1998 up still cannot be adapted as they were half digital and half analog and had a dac (digital anlog converter box. which is the resaon the top naqkamichi stereo system could not be ordered with navigation on 98 to 2000 gs and ls models which were digital and only supported the new pioneer digital radios. not upgrading to full digital systems was the death knoll for nakamichi the best oem steereo systems ever made. after 2000 the mark levinson system radios took over as the high end radios. i bet if an all digital nakamichi stereo system had been made in japan in 2001 the mark levinson stuff wouldnt even be close in sound quality. but nakamichi went out of business in 2000 another result of making products too well. most 1990 to 1994 ls400 stereo equipment is still working after 18 years. the only resason the sc400 nak amps had problems was because they mounted them in the bottom of the right quarterpanel where water typically collects from 5 diffrent leak points in an sc400 trunk.
that is correct a 2002 radio will not plug into a 1998 wiring harness. 2002 has a 20 pin radio plug and a 12 pin cd changer plug on the back of it. the 98 to 2000 radios have a 6 pin and 10 pin plug onn the back. and no there are no commercial adapters to buy. you would have to make an adaptor harness yourself. i am just answering as the most knowledgable club member on factory lexus audio and video systems. as my name infers lexus audio i know nothing about aftermarket installs only about factory units and which newer lexus units can be used in older lexus cars. in your case you want to use the 98 in a 2002. in that case the cd changer wiring would also be a problem as there is no cd changer plug on the back of a 98 radio. contact me for more info on the switch at egusman@woh.rr.com.
