Default Double Din Installation

99 GS300 without factory nav

i went to a car audio store today to look at double din's for my gs. i did not plan on having the shop install it considering i am pretty electronic savy.

the installer then told me, to intall a double din the factory amp would have to be bypassed (kind of figured this), but then he continued to say the ENTIRE car had to be re-wired, and i had to replace ALL factory speakers because of the ohm difference.

i find this hard to believe that (1) the ENTIRE car must be re-wired, and (2) i can not use ANY of the factory equipped speakers.

does anyone know if there is any truth behind this?

thanks

Totally not true. This has been covered many times before on how to bypass the stock amp. Try doing a search. It helped me a lot when I did mine.

99 GS without NAV utilizes the Pioneer system made for Lexus. The stock sub is 2 ohms. Stock front speakers are also 2 ohms. Rear speakers are 4 ohms.

The stock speakers are JUNK. You are much better off replacing the stockers with some good aftermarket speakers. Remember that speakers are the huge weak link. Upgrading the electronics will produce a bit of a difference, but the speakers SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE FIRST UPGRADE. That's true even if you spent 3 grand on a good head unit - the speakers will be the weak link.

Upgrade the speakers first, no matter how tempted you are to go for the double din HU.
