HD-based NAV to DVD-based NAV?

HD-based NAV to DVD-based NAV?
I have the first incarnation of the hard drive based Nav on a 1998 GS400. I am wondering what the differences are between the DVD based systems that would preclude switching the hard drive out for a DVD source?
Is the screen the same? Resolution, etc.?
Is the wiring harness different?
Other systems affected? Climate, audio, etc.
Never played with the Nav on a newer one, so looking for any information.
