The whole unit has to come out and then come apart... im very handy and found it to be incredibly tedious.
Id highly suggest buying a replacement head unit from somewhere... maybe the threads here or ebay or something.

I've got a 2000 LS400 with Nak too. We're screwed. The company that fixed my Nak headunit last year says that they can't get parts anymore to fix the 95+ Nak displays: http://www.carstereohelp.com/lexus.htm
They still repair displays on the standard Pioneer headunit for $140.

I've already started looking at aftermarket double-DIN units in case my Nak goes out again.

 

Is it just the backlight or the LCD display that's gone?
