Default '90 LS400 - Nakamichi stereo issue

Howdy everyone,

When I bought my LS400 a little over a year ago, it came with an aftermarket stereo installed AND the original Nakamichi stereo unit. Just this week I swapped the units out and found out that the Nakamichi head won't power on, although about 50% of the buttons light up. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong and how to fix it?

I've checked both of the fuses already, and they're good.

Thanks for any help in advance.

If you don't have the electronics background, I think you're better off taking it to a stereo repair shop as it'll be much quicker & to prevent further damage to the unit but check Yelp & shop around first for workmanship & price, respectively.

One of the local shops I asked said it could be as low as $70 to repair it, so I might try there. We'll see what happens.

the NAK system really kicked *** for a factory deal way back when. still louder and better than alot of cars 30 years later. wont have the modern functionality of a circa 2018 system, and good luck finding one thats all there with good speakers, sub, amp etc. as well as a working cd changer, -they never do.

possible the aftermarket stereo hacked up a few wires to get it to work.
it will need to be restored properly for the NAK headunit to work properly again. did it wire up easily (it should)?

If not I'm afraid the previous owner may have randomly bought any LS400 stock headunit and given it to you. non-NAK cars are wired different IIRC.

Too bad its not a service manual. Operations manual won't be too much help.
