I have a 2000 GS300 with a Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD head unit and i was wondering how hard it is to install a drop down monitor. Any write ups for DIYs would be great.

Does your GS have a sunroof? If so, I don't know how anyone would see a drop down screen, as it would have to be behind the final rest position of the opened sunroof.

As for how to do it, it's more about the time than anything, as you have to remove the headliner, the trim from both from pillars (A & B), and then snake wires from the deck and overhead console for signal and power, respectively. Then you need to create a mounting surface for the monitor, as you can't just glue it to the headliner. You'll need to secure a wood mounting frame to the roof, usually secured to the roof rails with screws if possible, or construction adhesive if not. You then cut out what you need to from the headliner, mount the unit after wiring, and reverse the tear down process. Again - very time consuming, and I'm not sure it would be worth it. Might be more feasible to have headrest monitors put in.

What size are you thinking of installing? I'd pass on the drop down and go with head rest. You won't have any extra weight on the roof and it won't block your rear vision should you use it while driving.

 

^^Agreed. Most cars that roll though our shop we steer towards headrest monitors. Lots have screens that are 7"-12" big.(12" looks reallll goofy LOL) Save the time and headache of dropping the headliner, especially in a car.
