Default Replacement DVD Player for RSES

Hello,

I have a 2004 GX470 w/ the factory RSES. The DVD player is located in console and has the following printed on the top:

DVD Audio/Video Player 57003

My wife inserted a disc while a disc was already in the unit. Now it will not read a disc. It states "Disc Check' (I think). The local dealer said it would cost $800 to replace! I find that hard to comprehend, for a unit that ONLY reads discs.

Does anyone have any thoughts ideas? I would like to find a replacement unit and swap them out myself. I can't seem to find out anything about these units.

Help! Thanks!
Greg

they are made by panasonic for lexus. . they list for 1700.00 , 800.00 is refurb exchange price.refurb means someone elses broken and fixed unit is what you get. they have some value as they are plug in and play on many other lexus models that had no optional dvd player such as gs430 and sc430 for playing movies on the front nav screen. also they are the only lexus player that read mp3s untill the 5th gen nav systems in 2006. so they were ahead of there time as far as mp3s playing. ........................................................................................ they only came in the lexus gx470 not any other lexus models and loaded gx470 models still arnt showing up often in salvage yards so they are quite rare to find used. i dont know of any car dvd players that do anything but read dvds as far your only reads comment. . the lx470 6 disc dvd cd player listed for $4,000 so a 1700.00 list lfor the gx470 quite inexpensive as far as lexus dvd players go. ..................................................................... all lexus products have avc lan communication system with the gx470 head unit so after market dvd player wont work. so that is the main reason the price is high as lexus has its market all to itself as aftermaket units wont work unless your replaced everything which would cost way more than 800.00. the 2007 gx470 mark levinson 6 disc dvd cd changer incorporates the glovebox changer and the console dvd all in 1 unit instead of being 2 seperate units and lists for 2800.00.

Wow! Thanks for the insight and data.

My point about the "reads only" comment was directed towards the fact that all HMI and controls are located in another piece of equipment. Just think about how much Home A/V equipment you can get for $1700...

The service guy never mentioned that the equipment would be refurbished... but that doesn't surprise me, either. We don't have a very good local dealer. We have bought 3 Lexus' and drove 2 hours (past out local dealer) each time.

The good news is... I found a tested salvage unit for $245. I hope all goes well! I definitely have my fingers crossed.

As far as MP3's are concerned... I did not know that I could burn a CD and play them through the system. I will have to try that. I have had a LOT of problems burning copies of DVD's to play. I can't seem to get them to play, yet theu wioll play on home equipment. Any thoughts? What application do you use to burn discs?

Thanks a bunch!! Greg

make sure the 245.00 dvd player is the correct unit. you have the made in japan by matsu****a (panasonic) unit factory assembly line installed dvd player but there were other dvd players installed portside which were fm modulated and made in other countries other than japan like korean made and could be installed by dealer in a gx470 that was not ordered to be installed on the asswembly line. ......................................................................... so you need to make sure which unit they are selling you for 245.00. the 1700.00 list price factory unit has toyota part number 86272-60040 and was made in japan. the part number you mention is 57003 which is on my in stock 2004 gx470 dvd player made by panasonic in the upper right corner. the panasonic factory installed unit has lexus in gold leaf on upper right of the open close door for the dvd. there is a holgram dvd emblem in center of the up down door. which says open with down arrow and close with up arrow. if the salvage yard dvd door isnt like that then you are not buying a factory in japan installed on the assembly line unit but a lexus accesory unit installecd aFTER TRUCK ARRIVED IN USA................................................................................................................................. so just make sure what trhe dvd player looks like and check what the one your ordering looks like before purchase. usually the factoiry units go more in the 500.00 range working used from a salvage yard so maybe the unit you are getting a unit that doesnt say 57003 on the unit like yours . that unfortunely many of the different regions of lexus dealers used there own version of the dealer installed dvd players. they installed them once they were here portside to maximize profit with korean made fm modulated units or sometimes german becker made units which also were still fm modulated and didnt even play though the direst circuit to the lexus stereo amp. this is quite confusing because many dealers also dont have any idea what unit you could be talking about if you dont have there version or another dealer installed it instead of being the panasonixc unit from japan ....................................... i am sure you have the factory uinit because the 57003 number is there on the factory gx470 unit i have in stock that i removed from the center console . here is the picture of the gx470 factory dvd player installed in the center console before i removed it . if the one your buying doesnt have the lexus logo in the left upper corner then it is not the factory dvd player.

Hey, does anyone have instructions on how to remove the player itself? Ours crapped out recently and I'd like to pull it out to check all of the connections.

I don't remember the steps as it has been a few years BUT, it is super easy. It seems like everything in the interior comes out simply, don't overthink it. I think it took me about a half an hour to R&R the DVD player.

lexusaudio,

You seem very knowledgeable about the Lexus audio systems, would you also know about the ML stereo system in the 2008 IS F and can you help? I have a speaker/subwoofer crack - getting that annoying sound with low base sounds (drums, base guitar, etc). Confirmed by dealership and still under warrantee, but problem is - they say that they'll replace it with a Panasonic part which is suppose to be the OEM part. Is that right???

Please help!

no there are no panasonic parts in an isf. the mark levinson system .has a pioneer made 6 disc receiver. radio,. sounds like the amp is the problem. maybe the parts guy was confusing panasonic and pioneer. the only panasonic made audio parts in a lexus was the sc400 12 disc cd changer from 92 to 97. just now the new ct coupe has panasonic made audio parts but it is just a toyota turned ionto a lexus like the hs model from a pruis.

Great info here, but got a question.

Can i replace the 6 dics CD changer in an 06 GX470 with a CD/MP3 changer from an 07 GX470, using the existing 06 headunit and display/graphics?

I just got off the phone with UnitedRadio.com because I could not find the dvd player in their list of items that they repair. They said that they do not repair the dvd units. I can not find any other places that repair the Lexus factory installed DVD player. Does anybody else have any ideas where I could get mine repaired?
