I wanted to get your guys opinion on porting through the arm rest. I was always told it was best to fire the subs away from you meaning towards the trunk lid and not the back seat. Now, are there any differences in sound or any benefits to doing this other than cutting down on the rattling from the trunk lid?

Oh and by porting through the arm rest I don't necessarily mean putting the port in the arm rest, rather something similar to this:

That works fine, thats what we do to every car that has an armrest, if not we go through the rear deck, bass response is very crisp, no trunk rattling, plus it looks so damn cool.

 

What if i did the same kind of thing but ported instead of sealed? Would it still sound as good?

 

Bass frequencies are non-directional, so response/sound should not be affected by the positioning of the speakers. (for the most part)

 

thats like a blow thru setup. very very loud, if not desidng right u will have lots of distortion

 

The design and specs(port size,size of each chamber) would determine the kind of bass that you get, also the crossover point.

 

The ported box would be build to JL spec of course. My concern is that the bass will not resonate as well as a sealed box would with this "blow thru" design.

 

Your crossover points are going to get you where you want it to be.

 

box tuning effects it too, it effects the peak frequency and the frequency u want to set the X-over to so the sub doesnt unload from over excursion. That box looks like a 4th order bandpass box to me tho

 

I guess I'm just gonna have to build a few boxes and see what I like best. Thanks for the help guys.
