Default Need help with GS400 Stereo Upgrade

Hi all,
I am thinking of changing the stock Pioneer system. Here's what I want:

Head Unit: simple CD player that plays MP3. It has to have decent amount of power to driver all my midranges.
Mid Range Speaker: the stock size is 4". I'd like to go bigger. Could 5 1/4 fit without the need of a new baffle? I don't mind drilling some new holes. On the other hand, sticking with 4" is fine.
Sub woofer: Stock size 8". I'd like to go bigger with just some minor modifications. Otherwise, please recommended what's a good 8" free air sub that fits.
Amp: just one for the sub since I'm thinking of driving my mid ranges with the head unit.

My budget is around $1000. Please recommend head unit, mid range speakers, sub, and amp. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

You can get baffles on ebay to fit 6.5" speakers in all the doors. I would get a separate amp to power your speakers instead of you hu.

Stock sub size is a 10 inch.

You can make custom baffles to fit 6.5 inch speakers. Use a spacer ring to keep the window from hitting the speaker magnet as the window is coming down.

You will be surprised at the sound quality after the changeout.

Then your best best is to fork over the $$ to a local audio shop and let them do the work for you.

Found them on ebay. Thanks. I notice that these adaptors do not have the back "pockets" meaning there is no enclosure for the speakers. On the other hand, the OEM baffles, from my understanding, would create a seal box effect (for the smaller size speaker, of course). In a sense, I guess bigger size speakers would be "free air" mounted. I wonder how they sound compared to stock?
Thanks

The stocks are tiny 4" midrange speakers that produce little to no midbass at all. I went with 6.5" components on custom baffles and the difference in midbass is night and day. Even though the doors aren't sealed that well it still sounds better than the stocks. After I sealed the doors with sound deadening materials the midbass is even better now. On some songs the bass is so good I probably don't even need a sub.

Good info. What kind of 6.5" do you recommend? Do you drive them with an amp or do you just use the head unit? I also need recommendations on head unit amp (if you have one)?
Thanks
