Well, my brother and I is having one of the most difficult time figuring out why is his music cutting out at low rpm for a second or so. First we thought it's the battery so we replace it with a yellow top optima one. Didn't help so we upgraded the alternator to 180amp one. Help a little but the cutting was still there. So we decided to add another yellow top in the rear and still have the same problem. I'm going to give you a little detail on his setup and see if you can help me figuring this out. His setup consist of
Alternator upgrade 180 amps
200x4 highs amp
2000 mono sub amp
2 12' subs
2 set of components
2 capacitors
0 gauge from front to rear (-)to body
I know you can run this with one battery plays normal when cruising but at low speed or stop and go it cuts off for a split second. Its aggravating the hell out of him and me for not figuring this out for him. Thanks for any help and keep up the good work!
have you put a meter @ the amps to see if you are having a voltage drop. have you changed or added heavier ground lead at the front battery? does the sound drop out of all speakers? do your amps have a protection light on them, if so is this light coming on? have you tried disconnecting one amp at a time to see if there was any change in the drop out?
I see an 0 gauged (-) front battery to body bout 1ft 1\4 to body. I see no protection lights on amps plays good but when you push the throttle or let go the music just pause a sec or so. Right now I'm running it off just the front battery and I also disconnected the sub amp but high amp still doing so. I've also trying just the front speaker and then just rear speakers but the problem still exist. Put meter on it drops in voltage when playing with the throttle. The digital caps tells me I got well above 13amps. I see the caps (-) ground wire on both sides is about 3ft long or longer. Can that cause any problems??? Should I shorten them??
well in general a ground wire should be as short as possible and not longer than a foot. you said 13 amps did you mean volts. what is the voltage when the stereo is up and cutting out. does it cut out at low volume as well as high volume and if the rpms are ran up to oh say 1200-1500 rpm does it still cutout or is at idle only?do the batteries have a full charge on them? if you didn't charge them up they may only have a surface charge on them. most batteries off the shelf are not fully charged. the optima batteries like a good slow deep charge such as a good trickle charge. have you tried disconnecting the alt and try the stereo to see if it still cuts out, i know you said you changed the alt but just trying to eliminate a few things. a dumb question for ya, is the alt belt in good shape and snug but not too tight? also when you put the bigger alt in did you upgrade the power line to the battery? i normally will upgrade that to a 0 gauge also and for protection i add an 175- 200 amp anl fuse or a circuit breaker. when the sound goes out does the radio stay on? good luck,
What turns the amps on and off? A control line from the head unit? Is it stable or does it glitch when the audio cuts out? Can you try disconnecting it from the head unit and tying it to the battery voltage powering the amps temporarily to see if it helps?
when the sound goes out does the radio stay on? This is the best question to answer right now, as the answer will tell you which way to procede. if it goes off, continue looking for power/ground issues, if it stays on, look for SPEAKER issues, i.e shorted speakers/leads, as this will cause the audio output section in your deck to shut down. since it is intermittant, you may have problems locating the problem.. good luck
Sorry guys deck stays on and amps also. It does also at low volume. It's dropping voltage also on the accessory from the factory wire. Remember it cuts when I'm slowing down from driving and stop and go intervals. I'm trying to get an 0 gauge from the alt to battery as soon I can get sum terminals in. Right now I have an 4 gauge from alt to battery now. Can that be the problem? I'm also trying to shorten the cap negative ground also. But dammm the terminals cost a grip hehe Thanks for all the advice yall Any other solution will be appreciated!!

hmm, you say the voltage drops on accessories also. have you measured the drop with a meter? if so what is the drop? the 4 ga from the alt to batt should be ok if you have a good crimp and tight connection. I know I mentioned it before but have you checked the alt belt. if it is old it could be stretched out and could be slipping. remember that a 125 amp (+) alt can cause a 5 horsepower drag at idle and needs a good tight belt ( but not overtight because this could cause early bearing failure. when the volume cuts out what do your dash gauges do, are they steady like normal? can you replicate this by having the sound on with the engine running or not? will it do it at idle in a driveway or parkinglot? this question is not meant to sound dumb, I know that sometimes when I am troubleshooting a friends car my neighbors do not like listening to me so I go up the street to the middle of the mall parking lot ( after I ask permission from the security gaurds and they know I am up to mischief). when the cutting out starts, is it constant or does turning the system down and running the engine help? I'm out for now, good luck
