Advice on Sub Box Differences
I read a lot about things and learn a lot while I am on this forum, but one thing I am a dumbass about is Audio. I dont know a thing about audio setups and whatnot. I dont know the differences between a sealed box, bandpass, ported, etc. If anyone is savy on these topics which I am sure most of you are, please give me some tips. I own a 07 IS350 and am looking into upgrading my sub. I was told that they would disconect my stock sub. Do i have to. I would like to have a removable 12" box added to my trunk that i can remove when i go on road trips and still have stock sub working. Also, is the JL Audio W7 a good one to go with, what about amp. And lastly, as stated before, what is the best way to set it up i the box...IE: sealed, ported etc etc.
thanks so much guys

There is no best way for subwoofer enclosures. There are different ways. This is a MASSIVE question you are asking, it's best for you to do some research. It's similar to asking, should I get a car, truck, or bike?
I'll get you off on the right path.

Explained in detail here - DIY Subwoofers dot org. A lot of that info comes from Deon Bearden (Klipsch and TC Sounds fame), Tony Gomez (aka Gomer), John J (Stryke Audio/AE Speakers), and dozens more on the old Bass List newsletter.

Ported, sealed - It depends on the sub you pick and what kind of performance you want out of it.

The JL W7 is a very good sub from a very good company. They will also charge what I think is a not so very good price for it. There are dozens of subs on the market that can compete with the W7 for a lower price. They just don't have the visibility of JL. They save their money by using the internet and word of mouth advertising. Unfortunately, you missed out on TC Sounds since that have all but stopped selling direct to the public. You can still pick up sub that were built by them but sold under the name Soundsplinter. Fi Car Audio, Resonant Engineering, Ascendant Audio and Elemental Designs are all good companies as well.

It also depends on how much trunk space ur willing to sacrifice especially going ported, which in my opinion is the best route to go.
I have built literally hundreds of enclosures over the past 15 years and up until recently, I have preferred a good tuned ported box over all else. I built a large sealed box for my Realm 12's and it sounds amazing. With the right power, some good quality subs and the perfect designed box, you just can't go wrong.
That said, I am running a JL 13W7 in my Honda Civic in a ported box and it is very loud. Sound Quality is decent but its not really designed for that. I make people a little noxious in that car.

www.wickedcas.com has custom fiberglass enclosures for youre trunk that will fit jl subs and loose no space in the trunk.

air space differs from woofer to woofer. find the woofer you like, both the output as well as the sound quality and then find out what the manufacturer specs are. build to specs and you should be good to go.
