Everyone will have different opinions on alarm systems. My 93 SC400 has a Clifford Intelliguard 800 which is close to 10 years old (if not older). When I bought the car, the alarm had been disabled. In fact, the dealer didn't know it was there. I found a replacement remote on ebay and powered up the system. Now I've got remote start, and auto window up/down and a ton of other features. Because Clifford was purchased by DEI a few years back, finding someone who knows about this model, was difficult. But I found a little mom and pop shop that is a certified Clifford dealer and talked to one of the techs. His professional opinion...it's a great unit but was known to "drop" its code from time to time.
I have yet to have that problem (knock, knock). To replace it with a comperable unit would cost around $500-600.

I just installed a Clifford Matrix 50.5x (DEI made) alarm and remote start. I mainly bought it for keyless entry and remote start capabilities, but now my car has two alarms. I'm thinking about installing a glass break sensor, and I like the paging functionality of the alarm: when the alarm goes off, it the car is in range, my remote fob also makes noise. This is pretty useful to me, and it is loud enough to wake me up from my sleep.

I just hope its a theft deterrent (I Installed the flashing LED near my stereo). Other than that, I make sure to never leave anything inside the car, keep it all in the trunk.. and I lock my trunk.

Compustar P2W900FM or P2WSS (their new pro series is pretty nice)

or Clifford/Python/Viper two way paging system (all made by DEI)
