10" Sub woofer replacment SC400
My 10" sub is sounding like aluminum cans in the back seat... Can anyone suggest a relacment that fits....I dont want to change the stock amp, just want a new sub woofer... help!!!
the sc400 nak sub is 5 ohms and the pioneer system 2 ohms and both around 80 watts. most aftermarket subs are 4 ohms and high watt items so there isnt a good match spec wise to the factory unit. the closest you can get is a lower watt aftermarket sub with 100 watt rating down to 30 watts and 4 ohms rating.
It is going to be dificult to replace that sub becuase it is a free air sub and they don't really make many of those. I went to AutoSpa this audio place in walnut creek, ca and the dude named rob there said he had done a few stereo systems in sc300/400 coupes and seemed to know what he was talking about. He said he built a custom fiberglass box to fit in the stock subwoofer hole so you can put any kind of sub in it. After talking to him I was thinking about upgrading the stock system too cuz he knew exactly what to do with our cars. PM for directions to the shop.

personally, I didn't care about the trunk space, so, I bought a JL 13w1v2 (13.5" sub), stuffed it in a ported box, and it's AWESOME... I bought the 13" sub because i wanted the really low bass... so far, it doesn't seem like it rolls off the low end until about 25 hz, which is awesome, but... it takes up about 3 cubic foot total in the trunk... Most could get away with a single 10" in a ported box, have more bass than stock, and still be really happy with loudness / bass response... this route, you would need at least a 150 watt amp though (mine is 55x4, with two channels bridged for the sub, so, about 180 watts to the sub)
try to find one of the aftermarket Pioneer free air subs. People were using those a while back. There was also a guy here on CL who built a fiberglass custom enclosure for his SC that was pretty cool...
maybe do a search and see if he makes them for other people. I THINK he did , but not sure...
good luck
