Default Carputer GPS Receiver placement idea - ok?

I'm finally working on my carputer again, and was thinking about affixing my USB GPS receiver behind the rearview mirror. The receiver will most likely be mounted at an angle, perhaps at best 35% from level

I'm considering this since it seems like the most discreet and cleanest way to mount the receiver (remove headliner and route wires through the body).

It's the GlobalSat BU-353

Since it will only have a clear forward view of the sky, I should still be able to pick up a decent amount of satellites right? Anyone have their carputer setup similarly?

that's a nice antenna! everyone is getting those now...

i have mine placed right on the passenger side dash area. Since i had to remove my dash, I just routed the wiring underneath. I think your idea is good. Should be good enough for satellite pickup. I believe there are over 9... so you should be good to go

ever think about putting it in your rear deck? Since it's USB, shouldn't be a problem. Just be sure you don't have titanium tint.

I was thinking about putting it on the rear deck (along with some ceramic tint), but I don't want the unit be visible at all, as I know my eyes will keep wandering to the GPS unit if it's in the back. I'm kind of weird like that

The BU-353 get's fairly good reception-- inside the house, away from the window, it still picks up 3 or 4 satellites which is pretty good.

How did you take out your dash? That much have been a hell of a task.

are you using iGuidance with that receiver?

also, dash isnt' too hard. Just gotta remove center console part and drop the steering column down a bit. I can give ya instructions once you pick up the door locks. hehe
