give the remote turn on lead a 12V signal and you should have power just like the head unit was there.

i'm looking at the changer cable now and they're not pins... so it's difficult to see the leads. how will i know which lead is the 12v lead and won't i need to figure out which is the ground lead too?

It should have been on the end that connects to the stereo. While I can't say for certain these are the colors, but generally....

yellow = 12V
red = ACC
blue = remote
black = ground

If that's the only cable coming out of the back of the changer, you're screwed.

Actually, just take it to a stereo shop and see if they can plug it in to one of their demo units and then you should be able to pop out the cartridge.
