Garmin StreetPilot III color navigation - is it any good?
http://www.garmin.com/products/spIII/
Of course I like the DVD navigation in my Lexus
much better. However, I have several non-Lexus
cars without navigation systems. I also travel
to other cities and rent cars and not all rental
comapnies offer them yet. I usually rent Hertz
and not all of their vehicles have nav systems yet.
Anyway, I'm looking into the Garmin Streepilot III
because it seems the easiest to take from car to
car...
If anyone has used it, please let me know what you
think. My local dealer sells it for $899. Is this a
good price?(if not, where can I find it cheaper?)
Thank you very much for any replies!

GPS
I purchased mine about 2 months ago. I loved it, I did find a few glitches on the way from MSP to PHX. THE GPS III has a tendency to think you are leaving the preassigned route, when you are really not (Especially in Freeways) I purchased my for about $720 on ebay. I would say that it is worth the money.

StreetPilot III
I borrowed a SPIII from a friend of mine at work one weekend, and I thought it was fantastic. The thing I like about it is that it gives you voice prompts as well as the video. When you are busy watching the usual bad driving morons around you, you can still listen to the directions to get to where you are going.
Actually, now that I think about it, I borrowed it to get to the guy's house to buy my GS from. It lead me right to his front door. What a coincedence !
Take my word this is the best one on the market. If you are a computer geek like most of us. There are some GPS products that you can add to your PocketPC or Palm that includes voice prompts as well. But not as good as the SPIII

I have the iPaq pocket PC and I use Destinator 1 GPS system with voice prompts. It's excellent. Only downside is the cables that run from the GPS unit to the ipaq to the cigarette lighter ... kinda ugly looking.

I have had a street pilot III for 6 months and the 2001 rx300/nav for 2 months.
The Garmin blows it away for accuracy, intuitiveness, and overall routing, I have the original firmware in the Garmin 2.10. which some say is the best.
The main thing is the Garmin's counting down to the next turn. Instead of letting you guess from .1 mile in, it changes to feet for the last .1 of a mile and I feel more confident in where the next turn is than in the Lexus. With the lexus, I'm always hoping I'll guess right wher the turn is.
The Lexus also chooses strange routes where the Garmin consistently picks the way I would go, or even teaches me a new better way! I have a pool service business and the Garmin has performed beyond my expectations. The Lexus, after having the Garmin is a disappointment. Yes, it is prettier, faster at calculating, and the touch screen is awesome, but if me or my family had to get somewhere and get there quickly and accurately, I would stick the Garmin on the dash of the rx just to make sure
