What's a good radar detector for under 250???

IMO, radar detectors around $200-$250 will all have the same type of technology. I don't think it will matter to much with which brand you go with. However, once you get in the $300-$400 range, then you need to look for the Valentine One or Escort 8500. Those seem to have the latest technology right now.
I saw the Beltronics Vector 955 at Sema back in Nov and it looked good. Their products have come a long way...

Stretch up to the Escort Passport 8500, you may be able to get a better price on ebay. List is 299 I think. You really don't want a detector that false alarms too much.

Got a Cobra 9700, retails for 200 at Circuit city and Best Buy but you can get it on ebay for much much less. Works great for me and has saved my A$$ many many many times, too many to count. X band is annoying and is usually a false alarm but that could be turned off. I got this for free so i can't complain!! I love this thing. It even talks to you.
