the name of the base system in 96 ls400 was lexus premium sound system.all the parts of the system made by pioneer . the cd changer option for the base system was made by pioneer and was an extra charge on the base system. the name of the extra charge over the base system headunit was called nakamichi. premium sound system. . ithe nakamichi option included a nakamichi made headunit and a nakamchi made amplifier with aluminum cooling fins. a nakkamichi made equallzer or also called a dac (digital analog converter ) which was attached to the digital output cd changer which was made by pioneer. so both systems cd changers were made by pioneer . nakamichi never made a cd changer for lexus. but the digital analog converter was made by nakamichi. that attached to the digital output cd changer made by pioneer for the nakamichi premium system. that is confusing to ownersa looking for a pioneer system cd changer as they often buy the nakamichi system cd changer thinking it is for the pioneer made system because the manufacturers sticker says pioneer on it not nakamichi. .
Interesting. So the HUs aren't really that different, it's in the CD changers and the DAC converter?
Basically is what I'm looking at is upgrading to the Nak HU and CD (I found an HU for a pretty nice deal, it's from a '95 and I gather '95-97 stuff fits my car only) then install better speakers accordingly. Do you happen to know if the Nak amp will swap right in place of the Pio amp?
