Did i mess up my Alpine unit?
Okay, I had a Sony Xplod unit in my car and was going to change it out to an Alpine CVA 1004 unit.
When my friend was doing the uninstall of the Sony, he found out that the plug from the Sony is identical to the Alpine one. So he just basically plugged the Sony wire into the Alpine unit, then we heard a sound just like static and a light "pop" from the speakers.
After that, he told me to unplug the positive terminal from the battery while he plugs it back up again. When it was time to put the terminal back the fuse blew out on us. It just keeps on blowing fuses...now we tried to put the old Sony unit back in and now that unit doesnt work either.
My question is did we mess up the Alpine unit by using the Sony harness? When I took it to a reputable audio shop the Alpine unit smelled like it burnt something and the guys said that it was toast. Am I pretty much SOL or is there something I can do.?

They might have been the same type connector but the wires were probably in different locations i.e, power, remote, ground, speakers, etc..... . Did you friend even see if all the wires were in same location? As for the Sony not working, you probably also blew the main fuse at the fuse panel and the fuse in the wire harness to the deck. Also, your memory fuse might have blown in the deck harness or another in the fuse panel that provided the B+ to your deck. Sorry to hear about your Alpine deck
.
.
I know when they told me that the unit was toast, I was about to cry...i mean I havent even used the darn thing. Anyhow, the kicker is I bought the unit in Cali. when I went on vacation and its one of those places they have there were everybody is at an alley and you can "haggle" with the sellers..so basically they are not an Alpine authorized dealer, so i cant just send the unit back in....arrrggh
Ouch!!!
NO warranty
. Maybe it can be fixed?? Have you opened up the unit to see what fried? Man I feel for you, not even using it for the first time, that really bites. So what does your friend have to say after damaging your deck??

It may be fixable, but you'll probably have to pay an authorized repair center. Two different manufacturers' units with the same connector do not necessarily use the same pinout. Unfortunately, you've learned this the hard way. Hopefully you won't have to spend too much to fix it.

Or do what I did when my changer got screwey. Call Alpine at 1-800-421-2284 and have them fix it for $90. I know it's $5 more, but you may be more comfortable to have it done by those who made it. Just a thought.

I really want to send it back to Alpine, but like I said above, I got it from a Cali. swap meet and they were not an authorized Alpine dealer.., but it's always worth a try right?
Hey thanks for that link....

No, it's fine. If it WAS from an authorized retailer, then it would be free under warranty. However, you can send Alpine ANYTHING they made, and they will fix it for $90, no questions asked. This just shows how cheap electronic parts are, and how bad they get us on the markup. Unlimited parts, and labor for $90. Mine was gone for two weeks, but it's been back for several months and working perfect. Give 'em a call!

Jet, thanks - that's good to know. What happened when you sent your HU in for service? Did you just call, get the address and send it in?

Called my friend that installed the headunit for me and said "sorry for messing the unit", "I will look online and buy you a replacement one, or if you like you can take off how much it cost from the price of my car"
So basically he really is trying to make good on what happened so I will wait till Monday on what he finds out.
But I will give that repair place a call, thanks Jet.
