Question

Just a quick question...It may be just me but i wanna make sure before i go check myself into the Mental hospital...... OK , why is it that my system gets MUCH louder if i open the sunroof/windows??Is it just me or is there a reason for this...if so, how can i keep it that loud with the car closed up??
Oh, I usually go for SPL over SQ ...or 'try' to have a nice mix of the two

It's usually due to the ASL (automatic sound leveling) from the unit itself. Picks up noise through a small microphone that's mounted in the stock amp. Open all the windows and as soon as it detects any noise, the level of bass and treble (some mid) goes up to compensate for the road and wind noise.

I noticed this too but not only in my GS, but in my Ford Explorer when I had the BOOM in the back!! Percy, could it also be that when the windows are down, more air is being pushed OUT so it seems louder? Like, there is more space for the sound wave to complete it's full length....??

Just a guess....

Talking Bass Wave Maturity

Justin - I've been to some Outlaw SPL meets & they let U do just about anything! I've noticed that, if U watch the meter & lower/raise your window or sunroof, U can actually gain a little pressure but there's a point of diminishing returns when U open it too much. Not sure about other woofers, but it takes approximately 13 feet for a 58Hz bass wave ( about a 10" woofer spec ) to fully mature/form. That's why U can fire them forward in a hatchback & pressure them, then fire them toward the rear & U'll gain ( & feel! ) the increase in pressure. The wave bounces off the hatch & rolls forward, gaining size ( in theory ). But, as Percy reminds us, U take the chance of wave cancellation if they're not aimed correctly. Just try it sometimes!!
