Yep Steer by Wire will be the future. I don't like the yoke steering wheel though. I don't whether yoke will be offer in the US, it is still a round steering wheel in Lexus.com.
Can't see any real problems with the concept, except of course the lack of a mechanical connection, and that's because I'm old-fashioned. Having said that, so much is done "by wire" and one seldom (if ever) hears of any occasion when it fails, in fact does it ever fail?
I'll reserve judgement until I drive but variable rate seems very dangerous. In an emergency situation depending on speed the ratio will be different meaning you won't know how much steering input is needed you might over correct or under correct.
This thread has nothing to do with Tesla but since you brought it up everyone I've seen that hated the yolk ended up liking it when they actually drove the car. Fake outrage.
obviously tesla started the new yoke trend so i'd say it's related. i guess actually the thread has nothing to do with the LC500 either.

every owner i've seen asked about it says they've gotten used to it but not necessarily 'like' it. and of course, if someone buys a tesla plaid they knew what they were getting into and most will rationalize any oddities/deficiencies - we all know the LC infotainment is odd/old but i've rationalized enough to get used to it.

You're probably right Tesla owners tend to be uh...enthusiastic. I know someone in Vancouver with a Plaid hoping to drive it soon. What do you think of Toyota's yolk? I find it busy and downright ugly maybe it's just me.

yes the yoke itself isn't very attractive, but i believe the variable steering by wire as nicely explained in the video is a GIANT win. i am a GIANT fan of the variable gear ratio steering on my LC500. how lexus managed to do it MECHANICALLY is beyond me (and yes i know they're not the only manufacturer to have done it, but I think Lexus' solution is technically the most elegant). to do variable ratio steering in software / controllers however, is a huge win because of course it can be adjusted/improved.
tl;dr yoke is eh but i think this lexus variable steering will blow everyone else away.
