Default Water Spots

The chrome trim that surrounds the front grille on my car had etched in water spots. Hand washing wouldn't remove them and neither did Windex or a few other products that I tried. I bought some Bar Keepers Friend liquid form, and it worked like a charm. Simply used a microfiber cloth to rub it in for a few minutes and then a clean cloth to wipe away the residue. Looks brand new. I figured some other members might run into this issue, so I snapped a quick pic after I tested a spot.

I have noticed that water spots are harder to get off my chrome lately. I had the PPF and ceramic done when purchased 18 months ago. Guessing ceramic doesn't grab onto chrome like it does PPF? Got some detailing to do when winter comes around.

Pink Stuff also works well. Like Barkeeper's Friend, I've used it on stainless steel, chrome, aluminum, copper, and a butt load of other things. It returned the exhaust tips on my IS500 back to their mirror finish.

I had mine PPF and they come off super easy. Wouldn't be surprised if the film or chrome has shed your coating in that area if it's been 18mo. That area takes a lot of abuse from rain driving and bugs. Probably less to do with being chrome and more just exposure relative to other areas.

I have success with Chemical Guys waterspot removal. I only needed to use a tiny amount on the bottom chrome. Came right off. I was super happy as that was the only water spot I got when I picked up the car.

The Chemguys Water Spot Remover worked very well for me too with little scrubbing and caused no damage. Make sure to rinse well afterwards.

Default Water spot removers

Water spots are from dissolved minerals (calcium and magnesium) left after the water dries. These cleaners contain mild acids (citric or oxalic, etc.) that solubilize the minerals. The Chemical Guys contains sulfuric acid, so it may be more corrosive if not rinsed off. These things are the same principle as using citric acid to remove hot water tank scale. Just be sure to rinse where the cleaner was applied well afterward.

sulfuric acid is very potent, gets rid of almost anything, ask Jimmy Hoffa.

That's a baseless accusation.
