Default Bespoke Build Mystery solved?

There are many experiences we have had trying to place orders for Bespoke Builds and dealerships are either unwilling or incompetent to do so.

Now, a simple search on autotrader nationwide, MY 23 and 24, sorted high to low…shows dozens of Bespoke builds for sale new in showrooms.

So, either: 1. All of these are legit orders that people
backed out of (I personally don’t believe this) or 2. Dealerships have been taking Bespoke slots for themselves this whole time, to sell out of inventory, hoping to add a ridiculous Market adjustment.

Thoughts?

There's a very good chance that some of the dealers, hoping to have something more unique than whatever they knew they'd be allocated, opted instead to buy a bespoke LC than let Toyota allocate them a car that they'd be sitting on for a while. My local dealer has two '23 convertibles still sitting on the lot, unsold. But they're both two of the more boring colors available on this car.

I sat down with my dealer in June to put in my bespoke order, the car came in late October. Dealer didn't charge me a deposit, they would not negotiate off of MSRP though.

With that said, I doubt that most dealerships are marking up one of their own pre-designed bespoke builds. Why would you, when it's not hard to find another dealer that will build the car you want for MSRP as long as you're fine with waiting.

See the other thread about the '24 Inspiration Edition, there are two coupes in the US and both of those are marked up $10K / $25K. Those are the cars they mark up I think.

Oh and one more thing, that problem with not being able to find a dealer to do a bespoke build for you, it's a real problem. The first dealer I tried to talk to about ordering a car for me stopped responding. Thankfully one of the other dealers in town was willing. I sat at the dealer for 2 hours going through all the ordering codes on mine and it still got screwed up (no HUD). Most dealers would rather spend the time asking your wife what color RX she wants than sell you a custom LC.

By comparison, I've spec'd two Teslas completely online and the dealership part of the process took a fraction of the time that paying cash for my LC did. I would gladly welcome manufacturer-run stores, the dealership model is unnecessary and unpleasant.

Another factor to consider that is Toyota/Lexus do not take orders for cars. From my understanding, they build the cars they want with the color/options/specs that they want and it is up to each dealer to grab a specific build for customers who want a specific color/option combo. When I was trying to get a Flare Yellow, two dealers I worked with strongly encouraged going the Bespoke route (2021-2023 time-frame), only because they know Toyota/Lexus does not build many in that color. What you're seeing could be customer cars or dealers trying to get specific color/combos that Toyota/Lexus won't put into production. It's a lot more eye catching for a dealer to have a Flare Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Nori Green, Copper Crest, USB 2.0 sitting in the showroom than a more reserved color.

1. No Lexus dealers are allowed to order them unless Lexus USA can validate a real customer ordering the bespoke. Lexus USA will not submit bespoke orders to Japan without a specific customer name / region provided at the time of ordering.

2. Once the order is made, buyer's name is attached thorughout. And, after the delivery is made, Lexus USA then re-validates that the customer has taken delivery + send that validation to Japan.
This makes sense to me. But then do you think that many people have backed out of legitimate Bespoke builds? I was really surprised how many are for sale New. Not even like 100 mile preowned.

I'm also debating getting one.... Luckily i have good relations with my local dealer, so Have the right of first refusal... I'm complementing getting this to until the next proper F car comes out (weather it be a new F coupe or the next Super car LFR). Only negative Unknown) that i don't know is how much this car woudl deprecate in the next 2-3 years. Does anyone have any data on prior Inspirational series that were offered for the LC500? Would love to get some input

Here is my story: During the laste 2022, I purchased 5 new vehicles from the same dealership mother company (currently own 8, and 1 more inbound (Porsche)). So, I am considered a VIP with the dealership chain. One of the reasons why I was offered the new 718 Spyder RS (Final mid-engined ICE Porsche) at MSRP (People are paying $100K ADMs for these, if they can get one). Anyhoo, here is what I went through to 'order' my custom 2023 GX 460..

When I found out about the up and coming GX 550 and it's likelihood of having a turbo engined in it, I knew I wanted to buy the V8 version since I also missed out on the Land Cruiser Heritage Edition (Final V8). I called everywhere but I could not find the spec I wanted. What I wanted was the GX 460 Luxy trim + Sport Package + Off-Road Package. On top of that, I wanted black exterior with white interior. This spec did exist but were all sold out. And the final production window was closing in fast. And to make matters worse, Lexus USA only ships the vehicles with off-road packages to specific regions only (i.e. Florida, Colorado, Utah, etc..,). I've called many dealerships, and they all said sorry, we don't have one. And for the different colored and optioned ones that was in-bound were all spoken for. One dealer in Utah quoted that there was a list of 150 people waiting in line to get one before the V8 was discontinued.

So.., I called the GM at the Porsche / Audi side, and he called his head company to ask if anythng was possible. The head company responded with "Lexus does not take custom orders", but connected me with the GM of the Lexus branch. This GM went out of his way to contact the sales / marketing dept at Lexus USA and asked for a 'favor'. They told him they would try, but no guarantees. Timing also worked in my favor because the head of the dealer management for Lexus USA was visiting my dealership that very week. A month later, I get a call from the GM, and he told me that Lexus USA marketing reached out to Japan to see if they would build one more vehicle with the exact spec I want, and ship that car to a region which doesn't receive any GX vehicles with the 'off-road' package by default (dealers have to initiate a trade). Lexus sent a note to the marketing manager with note of accepance of the 'custom' order request, and sent the build slot date.

Rest is history. I have my beautiful GX. So by default they do not take custom orders, nor most of the dealers will go thorugh hoops to help you. But in my case they did accept my custom order. And I was able to secure this piece of history. And here she is. Proof that in certain circumstances, they do take cusom orders (isn't she a beauty? Maxed out GX 460 / final V8 SUV). Currently in North Carolina home awaiting my visit.
That is one awesome story and that V8 is a keeper.

GM's first name wouldn't happen to be Garry from a NOVA dealer...wouldn't surprise me if its not the first time he called in a "favor."

asong1,
Neat experiences.

I see from your pics you have a 718 Spyder.

I must ask if you took the 718 Spyder RS allocation? And is it being produced?

I was offered an opportunity to try for a Spyder RS (Canadian market) when my regular Spyder order was dropped since Spyder production was ceasing; this after 1.5 years of waiting.

So I crunched the numbers for a Spyder RS in Canada at MSRP.
My build would be about $260k MSRP (with some options) plus taxes ($26k luxury tax + 13% HST of $286k = ~$63k total taxes) totalling about $323k at MSRP.

Hmmm? Wish I could but my pockets “ain’t that deep”.
No.

Getting a Spyder RS?
