Default Checked Your Key Fob Battery Recently?

Mine are both March 2010 vintage, 2.5 years old, they had less than .4volts left, should have about 3.0volts.

Not sure what voltage threshold is when it actually stops working, but .04 must be close. And Murphy will dictate, it will late at night, out of town etc etc when it does fail.

I know you can still break into the car with the mini key the slides out and leaving the small cap off at the end of the drivers door handle, but not very cool when coming out of a restaurant with your partner on your arm;-(

Even worse if they have valet parking-which I normally avoid-some high school kid parking my pride and joy.

Battery is CR1632, Target, Wally World, all the major pharmacies etc carry them. Its a 30 second job to change them out and no reprogramming.

If battery is dead, you still can start the car. In the owners manual it says to touch your fob to the start button and let it register, then start the car. Its a fail safe just in case its completely dead. I had to do that a few months back.

for *****s and giggles, im going to pull my battery and try this method.

You'll get a "Low Key Fob Battery" warning on cluster, and at that time I'll change it out. I keep a battery in the ash tray and can change it in a couple of minutes when it is time.

A good way to be prepared...

1) Familiarize yourself with how to change the battery in the key fob (ridiculously easy)

2) Order one (or a few) of the batteries on eBay/Amazon/etc

3) Keep them in the trunk of your car (in the toolkit for example)

4) If the battery ever dies, use the manual key to open the trunk...get the battery out and install it.
Shouldn't take you more than a couple mins wherever you are

You won't have to pop off the cover on the door, and you won't have to hold the key up to the ignition to start it afterwards!

Never knew the start button could perform the Vulcan mind meld. Going to have to give that try just to see it.

OK, didn't know there was a light for that-low battery. So forget this whole thread I've been wasting your time;-)

To be fair, I've just sold my BMW, where you can't replace the battery-they call it a capacitor (its a battery). They glue the fob together so the only way to get into it is almost destroy it with a Dremel tool. Then you can pop a 3volt battery in (a real one, not a fancy capacitor), and glue it back together-looks like hell.

Did I mention the price for a new 'battery' $261.00, I had to buy one a few weeks before I sold the car and got the Lex.
