So my car is a 06 is350 and has only 41k, says I need a service at 42k..
Wondering exactly what they service for a $1000 bucks?..
Might just skip it all together and save some dough, my car is running fine and had a oil change recently.

There is no 42k service. Typical dealer BS "recommended service" most likely. Everything should be in 5k intervals....your next "big" service after 30k would be 60k. At 42k you need nothing and if you got the oil change done already, you're fine.

I'm curious as to what they wanted to do at 42k that would cost $1k though, did they tell you?

 

They will "inspect" a couple of things, change your oil, and probably rotate your tires. But even $1k is steep (in regards to dealer pricing) for all that. My "30K service" also included flushing the brake fluid for $1K. I walked away and did it myself.

With typical dealer prices, only the 60k service (spark plugs) should be close to $1k.

 

Nothing on the car should ever be $1000 even at a dealer if you actually just ask for what you need.

Oil change- $50 at local dealer (every 5k by the book)
Brake fluid change- $110 at local dealer (every 30k by the book)

Dunno what spark plugs are at local dealer as I'm not there yet, but I know it has to be a whole lot less than $840.

 

I could be mistaken. Maybe it was around $500, I dont remember. I do know it was a ridiculous price for what they wanted to do

Exactly the same as the 30k service-

Oil change- $50-60
Brake fluid change ~$100-120

that's it.

You should also change the cabin and air filters, but you can do those yourself in 5 minutes for like $50 in parts.

As always only ask for the services you actually need. Ask instead for the "X miles" service and they'll do the same work for 3x the price.

 

NEVER, ever go in to the dealer and ask for the xx,xxx service or you will get reamed. Look at the maintenance schedule and only do the things that require changing or replacing, like brake fluid, plugs, filters, etc. All the other crap like check this and check that can be done by the owner and is what drives the price of the service up. Be specific for what you want done and just ask for that service and you will save plenty of money. And some things like change a/c filter and air filter can easily be done by the owner. These cars require very little maintenance.

 

Did it missed the 40K service? I noticed that the car go by miles since last reset, so if the last service was done at 37K, the car will say you need service at 42K.

I got my 40K service a month ago. I just ask for an oil change ($50); the dealer inspected my battery, tires, brakes for free -- if those are worn out, I guess they'll ask you to pay for replacement :/ They also replaced my battery under warranty.

Does the timing belt need to be replaced around 90k also?

 

The ISx50 engine do not use a timing belt they use a timming chain. Unless you are confusing the accessory belt for a timing belt.

 

Yeah, at 40k they change oil and filter and at 45k they also do the oil as above and clean your engine air filer. They replace it every 30k and clean it between btw

 

Do they give you a loaner still if you only get the services you require? Just curious because if I ask for only certain services and don't get a loaner then I want to plan my work schedule around the time I have to wait there. Thanks in advance!

 

Generally they are not required to provide a loaner at all unless the car will be there overnight (ie require 8 hours or more of service)- from lexus.com

some (possibly most) dealers provide loaners more generously but national Lexus policy doesn't require it.
(mine for example provides a loaner for any service requiring 2 hours or more- meaning no loaner for an oil change, but I got one when I did oil change and brake fluid change (thanks $500 lexus gift card!))

So you're best off calling your local dealer and asking specifically what their loaner policy is.... it'll almost certainly be "We provide them for any service exceeding X hours" with X being 8 or less depending on the dealer.
