Ok, I basically follow the great DIY thread here:

Unfortunately, I could not find much information on where to get an OEM switch with indicator lights like what javyLSU(Javier) got on the thread above, nor know how to hook up the OEM switch to the 2 wires coming from the engine bay.

So.... after a few days of researches, here are what I have now (see pics). In the next few days/weeks, I plan to retrofit all the wires/connectors and put everything back for a better OEM look.

1. Headlight/Parking light OFF + Fog light OFF + interior dashboard/switch light OFF = Fog switch: Fog indicator (Amber) OFF, back-light (Green) OFF:


2. Headlight/Parking light OFF + Fog light ON + interior dashboard/switch light OFF = Fog switch: Fog indicator (Amber) ON, backlight (Green) OFF:


3. Headlight/Parking light ON + Fog light ON + interior dashboard/switch light ON = Fog switch: Fog indicator (Amber) ON, backlight (Green) ON:

How did you connect the 2 wires to the back of the 4 prong OEM switch?

Or did you use different wires?

As cool as this is, what is the point? I mean why not just wire up the fog light switch on the stalk to do that?

Or am I missing something?

Yeah, looking at the diagram for the fog light setup now, I can see how it would be difficult to do, although it definitely looks possible, would just take some extra work, because you'd likely have to open up the stuff in the steering column.

Tim, the Toyota switch I got has 6 prongs 2 for the back-light, 2 for the indicators, and 2 for the wires coming from the engine bay.

While he is correct about the BEAN connection from the combination switch to the body ECU, that is actually from the wiper switch to the body ECU. The fog light switch itself is quite simple, it's just 2 wires, from the headlight switch to the wiper switch. That would be where you would need to cut them and reroute them to wherever you wanted. (Wires are black and light blue, pins 3 and 4 on the connector from the wiper switch to the headlight switch).

The issue is of course that the steering column is a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, and you're going to need a wire down from where you splice in to the wiper switch/fog switch to wherever you are controlling. I would think it should be possible, but I haven't ever done it on a newer vehicle.

EDIT: Also he mentions doing a 2JZ swap and worrying about controls/functions still working, and while it is true that there are a lot of communications between the body and engine ECU's, they do perform a lot of their functions independently of each other. I know there is at least one 2JZ-swapped 2IS out there now, I wonder how many troubles he's run into trying to get body functions to work. I would think that the best way would be to basically leave everything in the 2IS alone and run the 2JZ electronics (standalone, whatever) almost completely separately. Some interesting aspects to it would be stuff like the Smart Key starting, which the engine ECU monitors the engine to keep the starter cranking until the engine starts. It would be an interesting project to undertake, I would think.

Thx, but to be honest with you, I don't even know if I can make it work doing it 2nd time I have to retrofit most OEM harness which is PITA , and am lucky to have sunshade button next to it in order to power on the Fog switch back-light.

 

Nice, looks oem! What car is that switch off from? It blends and fits in nicely..
