hey.. first post here.. just purchased my first lexus.. 2008 is250awd.. i was a former bmw driver.. the cars are definately different..

im trying to change the drl as im reading its not possible to turn them off without the dealer doing it (i will ask at 1000 mile inspection)..

i have these 100w hyper white 9005 bulbs that i never used before since i purchased them without knowing they were more than oem wattage..

1) my first question.. would these bulbs be safe to use as long as i don't use the highbeams? i hear that drl lights run at about half power anyways so i'm assuming the whole 100w wouldn't be used unless i turned the highbeams on..

2) second question, would running led 9005's set off any bulb out warnings without using a resistor? thanks..

 

I would strongly advise against using the 100w even with the DRL running at half power. Don't take any chances.

First off welcome to the club!

I can answer your first question. I dont think that should be a problem. If you use your highs dont use them for an extended period of time. It might melt the wiring harness or even the lamp assembly.

On the second question i dont think it is a problem. But I dont think the leds will even light up since it is lower voltage.

LED drls will light up without any issues. but since the drl circuit effectively cuts half the power to the bulb in drl mode, the LEDs will flicker.

 

I have them in for about a month now with no problems. The DRL circuit uses reduced voltage, so the only time they will draw 100w is when you are using the high beams. I only use the high beams briefly when flashing someone to get out of the fast lane. I also used dielectric grease/compound on the connectors. I checked the wiring after keeping the high beams on for 10 min and there were no problems. Remember standard high beams are rated at 65w. I'm using these.

hows the color with the drl's on? i heard that normal hyperwhites look yellow due to the lower wattage.. are the 100w more white in color?

so considering the led's are only 1-5 w and drl's give half power to them, i assume drl's are programed to use half of the bulbs power rather than a standard half of 65w correct? so if i used a 100w bulb, they would run at 50w with drl's on.. considering highbeams are 65w, it should be safe for drl usage only..

from what i know, all bulb that claims to have "white" or 8000K color, when used as DRL light, it will still be yellow because of the low wattage..only DRL LED's will give the white output..

 

I would estimate the temp at approx 3500K or as bright as a standard halogen bulb. Much whiter then the OEM DRL. I think it is perfect and you don't lose your high beams. Actually the high beams are awesome!

Great that you posted the pic. Looks like you enjoy the yellow fog overlays as well?

 

I wouldn't do it. I used some luminics bulbs for a while for my HB/DRL and although they were slightly whiter as DRL they were still yellowish as they were only running at half power. Also, when I did use the HB, because of the increase draw, I blew 2 fuses before I realized it was the bulbs. Since switching to Sylvania Silverstars I haven't had any blown fuses. They aren't white but they're not as yellow as the OEM bulbs. If you want white, go LED. But remember, your HB won't be that bright. Just my .02 from my own experience trying to solve the same issue.

 

stock is on left, PIAA 4100 9005 on right. the PIAA's as highbeams are super bright and annoy drivers infront

Gives off a really nice white/blue, it does flicker, but confirmed that its not damaging, and actually I like the way it does it. In the day, its noticeable but not too bright.
