I've never had any issues with Discount Tire, those guys are awesome with me and my experience with them
I just put a set of PS4S on about 2-3 weeks ago sizes 255/35/19 & 275/30/19........by the way, lovin the tires and a worthy upgrade from the PSS that they replaced

I've never heard of the lower quality tires theory at places like Costco. That's interesting .
I hope I don't have this issue when I take my recently refinished stock 08 wheels to Costco to have my new Michelins mounted. I ordered them in the standard wider sizes through the Costco website.

I normally always go through TR because I get a pretty good discount using my shop account lol and I mount and balance them myself. I’ve never personally bought tires from them but have customers who’ve done it once and never gone back. But hey if you don’t notice a difference and you’re getting a great deal by all means!!

I use factory tire specs on both my cars. Costco refused to order winter tires for me because they couldn’t get anything with the right speed rating for the car. My other car has the factory equipped optional plus size wheels. That size doesn’t link to the car in their system. They also refused to work on the car even after I showed them the manual and door jam that showed that size.
I use Discount Tire. 0 issues.

My local NTB will install anything I ask them to put on a rim. They also let me stand in the shop and guide the alignment process so I get the numbers I want. Sad that all these companies are making it difficult to get a decent price for rubber and get it installed, but I am not surprised at all. Many companies are developing extreme risk aversion at the hands of their legal teams - I sell enterprise computer security services, so I see lots of it daily.

Ordered the tires from Tire Rack and had them installed at a local tire shop this past weekend. All is good! Tire Rack called me about the order before they shipped them out. Wanted me to know these tires we not the OEM spec tires. :-)

Those sizes are the same as mine and I have PS4s in the rear and I think PS3 in the front....no issues at all

I believe if you go to costco and just drop off your rims, they will do it. But they will not install it on to a vehicle that does not match the factory specs if they have to dismount the wheels off the vehicle. I have done this personally without issues. In fact, they told me that was the loop hole if I wanted to get it done.

There are times when imho one can appreciate a corporation doing the right thing, this is one. Like if a bank (who goes inside one anymore) won't cash a check because you have no ID. Have you ever seen someone get irate and say they're closing their accounts because a teller won't give them money without any ID? lol
Even Tire Rack won't sell you tires/rims anymore unless you acknowledge (lie) that you are having TPMS installed (makes no sense if they are mount/balance for free) later.
I have seen Costco in operation, they have some nice lifts and all the tools, so if they go by the book, it's ok. We can go to a specialty shop for anything else. Plus sometimes it's better to go to places who deal with 30's so you don't get the "well the sidewalls were so stiff of course I marred up your rims" excuse.
Though I admit the Costco $130 off through 10/28 was a good deal.

That's odd, as a couple of weeks ago I had Costco mount/balance a pair of 285/30/19 on the back (2012 OEM wheels) with no gripes. I bought the tires from Tire Rack and had them in the car for them. Granted, the old tires on the back were 275/35/19.....which they also put on for me, and no issues with those (which I upgraded from the stock 255s). The only thing was when I initially put on the 275s, the shop manager said: "we had quite the time stretching those low profiles on the back..." I got no such commentary with the 285s.....except the guy joked and said that they tested it out by doing a couple donuts in the parking lot (it was a late and wet weekday evening).
Still, the thing that impressed me way back when I initially took a car to Costco for tires was that they take the wheels off with cotton gloves. I was impressed.
