Can someone recommend the next best way to measure the pads without removing them? I had my car in for the dash replacement and the dealer told me my pads were at 2mm and I have less than 9k miles on them..

For the fronts? You can remove the rim and turn the wheel so you can see into the opening on the top of the caliper.
You will be able to determine the amount of pad remaining this way.

No, this is not how this is done with a caliper. Do it like this:

I did something wacky.. Took off the wheel and stuck a combination of Uncle Sam's coins between the backing plate at the outer edge of the rotor...... I got ~3.6mm with my caliper... Guessing the rotor's edge is about 0.5-1mm thicker than the face of the rotor where it meets the pads... So let's call it 4mm? Even so, I thought I read these came new at 10mm... How did I burn that much up on street driving? My last set lasted a good 40K+ miles with track days.

Next time just use a magnet. Same result, but way less hassle.
