Default Brake pad question

2 of the brake pads have the little clip on them. What's the purpose of them and what orientation do they need to be in when installing Akebono brake pads?

Yes only 2 of the pads have the clips according to the pic I got from amazon. Does it matter where those go (left or right of rotor, clip on top or bottom)?

It's a wear indicator. When the pads are worn they rub against the rotor and make a screeching noise to let you know to replace the pads. The go on the inside.
