Not another exhaust question I promise... Although it is quasi exhaust related.
I recently installed a couple of Magnaflows to replace the factory mufflers. It's reasonably loud but not unbearable. It sounds particularly mean on downshifts so overall I'm satisfied with the results.
However, when it's lugging around in auto mode and if I put my foot down, there is a part of the rev range that causes a metallic resonance noise from the rear. It's usually between 2-3,000 rpms on acceleration in 4th gear. Sounds horrible and unbecoming of a Lexus.
I had a look under the car and nothing is touching. I suspected it was the factory tips or the heatshields above the mufflers. I had my daughter sit in the rear while I was clanging around underneath banging the tips and the heatshields. She seems to think that its the heatshields which I would probably agree.
Do any of you guys out there running aftermarket exhaust systems experience this? Is there any harm removing the heatshields? The magnaflows sit further away from the heatshields than the OEM muffler.
i have that issue but usually only around town in 1st or 2nd gear..it's not an issue on the highway..where it sounds glorious as you mentioned on down shifts
You won't believe how much the mufflers move when the car is in motion... when I had my straight pipes installed, they were hitting the heatshields behind the OEM tips... when we put the car on the lift, we took the pipe and shook it, and it wasn't close to hitting the tips. If your magnaflow mufflers have hangers, look into shortening them so they aren't even close to the back of the exhaust tips... otherwise look into trimming the mufflers. I just bent my heat shield downwards, that's also an option.
