Just wondering is there a unit I can plug into the car to read and delete error codes myself?

Have done a search but couldn't find any units, just a lot of talk about codes in general.

Absolutely! I have one that I use with the Torque app (purchased version, not the free one) and I love it! The free one will give you some limited information, but the paid one gives you so much more and it's well worth the $6.

I would rather pay $10-$15 for that device than make a trip to Pep Boys/AutoZone/O'Reillys any time I wanted to read or reset a code.

When i didnt have one, Oreilly's loaned one out. They charge you for the loaner, then credit you back when returned. Good deal if you need to change out something and clear things too. I eventually got one and great to have for the vehicles...

 

Its worth it! just throw it in your glove box and you'll always have a code scanner

 

Personally, I would recommend buying your own scanner. It'll come in handy more than you think with relatives' cars, co-workers, etc..

I think the one I got was around $70 at Pep Boys or Autozone. Perhaps pricey but it's a great little gadget to have in the car. I needed it all the time in one of my Evos but haven't used it with the Lexus yet.

It doesn't need to do much so I have never found one model better than any other. You just need the Scan and Clear buttons which all of them have. If you don't want to buy, post in the local forum and for sure somebody will have one nearby you can just meetup and use.

 

I agree with you. But wouldn't u consider the Bluetooth unit above similar?

Sure, it should be just fine. I just prefer a simple plug-n-play device that is nearly idiot-proof, which the code readers are. Both achieve the same goal for sure.

 

My brother just bought this for me lol. I downloaded the app. Seems legit but does it really read/clear codes?

 

I have the wifi version, and yes it reads codes and clears them if you want to.

 

I have the bluetooth version and it work good and I was able to clear codes.
