Default Tank average: Is it accurate?

On the way to Orlando, 230 mile trip, 70mph, 78 Degrees

On the way back, Everything the same except it was 72 Degrees with off and on rain and some wind gusts. I didn't feel the wind

Did my car not like the ride home??

i have an app on my android phone that i use to record gas fill ups and mpg for each tank and usually the Tank AVG is about 0.5-1 mpg more than the calculated one, so not that far of a difference...

i've done road trips to houston often and usually i get high readings at first but then drops a little when i get near 1/4 tank mark... I say this because you got readings from only about 75 miles of highway driving... i usually can get about 250-275 miles continuous highway driving when i hit the 1/4 tank mark...

how much gas did you have left after 230 miles?

Did u go 70mph consistently?? Were there any stop lights.. Did u catch the Drafting off a big rig...did u have to stop anywhere??... There are tons of factors that coulda made a difference... remember it's just an 'average' ... Wouldn't worry about 2mpg difference...

Rain adds to the rolling resistance of the tires.

You should look at the tank average when you're almost at empty. Checking it when you're well over 3/4 of a tank doesn't give a good reading.

My F did similar on my last trip to Orlando with it, on the way up it got 26.x mpg cruising at 70-75. On the way down, I only managed something like 25.2, at the same speeds with just about the same amount of traffic.

This is true. I take it all the way down til im running on fumes before I refill. Plus, I like calculating mine manually. I just dont trust that computer.

It's a math formula. It's true at one gallon and just as true with a empty tank. The tank miles per gallon is easier to change with less fuel used but the formula does not vary.

Depends if you "overfill" the tank.

I do not think that the computer actually records the amount of gallons that you put into the tank. It makes assumptions depending on where the gas gauge reads. Full is probably calculated at the stated capacity. You can overfill the tank, or more specifically the fill neck if you put more gas into the tank after the auto shut-off at the pump.

That is why you need to let the tank get near empty before you look at the tank average. It averages out this extra capacity over a greater number of miles.
