Default Oil Weights

This is not a specific IS-F question, but I figured more people are interested so this is why I am not sending a PM to lobux

I'm thinking about switching from Castrol to Motul 10w60 in the BMW. However all the literature I've read states the Motul is for bike engines, not car engines. I am trying to find other standards or specs, but as usual the only stuff I can really find is the Mercedes 722 specs

castrol oil for bmw, especially the m3 is expensive! the lowest price is around 12-13 bucks a quart. So 13x8= 104 + labor = ouch.

sry i dont know the weight

BMW is pretty secretive about their oil specs. They just tell you to run the European Castrol synthetic because it's a group IV oil (really good stuff). No idea if Motul meets (or exceeds) BMW's spec.

There are LOTS of Internet forums with long discussions about BMW and VW engine oil selection.

Have you looked in Eneos oils? They just released their new line called "Sustina".

Castrol TWS 10W30 oil is very old technology - I believe it is Licensed /rated SJ and recommended exclusively for the "M" line.

SJ/ GF4 is 3 ratings ago......SL, SM, and we are now on SN/ GF5.

Motul is not just for the biking set. They make terrific engine oil, just hard to find a distributor. I believe their 10W60 is meant for a 4 stroke motors only....but they make good Synthetic 5W30's if you can find them in your area.

From here. They give you two choices. Regular BMWs can run any SM oil. It never ceases to amaze me how they like the heavy weight oils that take so long to get to temperature.

The following is the only recommended and approved synthetic oil for BMW M (Motorsport) vehicles in the US market with gasoline engines, at the present time.

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Synthetic Oils for BMW M vehicles equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines:

Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil

Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420)
By the same token, Castrol SRF brake fluid is also very old technology and still found in some of the fastest cars.

All fair and good, but I'd never run a racing oil on the street. It's really bad idea for anyone who isn't competing.

If you're really concerned about it, just send it to Blackstone and have it analyzed, and watch the iron content in the results.

I read the whole document. I've seen more than my fair share of oil religion on the 'net from a wide variety of sources. I'm pretty certain these guys have tested a few different oils on one engine (at least from what they claim). I also know what I've seen across a wide variety of engines whose used oil has been analyzed.

But you don't need to believe me. Ask Blackstone what oil they use - they see everything across a cornucopia of oils in the broadest of applications. I think you'll be shocked at what they tell you.

This is not an argument between you and I. As an engine builder and turner with over 20 years in. I can only say from personal experience what I see and use. Doug

Fair enough. I built my first engine in 1973 after watching my dad who has more years than both of us combined. What next?

Just stick with what BMW Suggests, it's not like you can't find the specified oil. I only use BMW approved oils in my bimmer unless I am topping off and is out of the recommended stuff. If you want to save a few bucks, PM me for info as to where to get your Oil from a BMW dealer at a discount.
