Looking inside the engine compartment with everything being so dark turns me off with seeing a silver engine cover. I decided to experiment with my painter on painting the cover...it's definitely my taste, could be yours or maybe not. It's painted glass black and a redish color. It's a tad bit dirty @ the moment. Positives/Negatives feedbacks are highly appreicated.
I'd like to paint mine. These look hot!! What kind of paint should I use? Anything special?
Use a quality high heat spray paint I prefer VHT products, next use acetone or presole to clean and degrease the area you want to paint, next mask off the area's you don't want paint to get on using blue painters tape. Your first two coats should be light then you can apply heaveir coats of paint and your done. Cost $20 to $25.
Now if you want smooth finish like my engine cover this much more labor intensive. First you have to sand area down, once thats done you need to apply several thin coats of body filler and I mean thin coats sand them down. Then prime that area using high build primmer wet sand fix any imperfections prime again and wet sand. Then using high heat paint applying several thin coats then building them up once dry apply high heat clear just for some extra shine and protection and your done. Cost $50 to $75 depending on type of paint and clear used. I used automotive paint on my cover and VHT high heat clear waited a few days then wet sand clear and buffed out using 3M medium cut rubbing compound, sealer then wax. My total cost was $100 due to extra steps I took.
