Thumbs up Winter capable??? Hell YEAH!

Hi guys.

Due to an unforeseen emergency, I had to make a long distance road trip the past couple of days. Both of my SUV's are due for service and I didn't have time to deal with getting the AdBlue topped up in time. So the F was my only choice at the moment.

It ended up being a 27 hour travel "day", from Monday at 6:30 pm to Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. 2000 km through the worst blizzard I've ever encountered just north of the US border and then another doozy on the way home last night. The pic is after getting to our destination after picking up my buddy. It was even worse when I got home last night...lol.

The F handled it like a champ and I'm sure there were lots of people wondering wtf I was doing driving it in those conditions....lol. Blizzaks and Snow mode FTW!

Am on Blizzaks ( LM-25s ) as well!! This just proves that the F is very capable in snow. But I am sure that you also have great snow driving abilities.

Much love!!
I just had the first fat flake snow here yesterday and was glad I had the premonition to swap snow tires the previous day. No accumalation but still fun to pass rx350's that are white knuckled....probably should have kept 2 hands on, but it was not that bad.

She went to the carwash before I even went home, much to the chagrin of my wife...lol.

Ironically, the buddy that I picked up is from Denver. Amazing how a little dump like you guys had on Monday cripples that city. I wish that we could have seen as far as in your pic. At points just before we stopped, we couldn't see the hood...of our own car...lol.

Yeah I have been in those as well. Cross drifts and white out conditions. With the old IS I once treaded Monarch pass which was on the way to Crested Butte with 6-12" of fresh snow in places. It was just me and the snow plows. Now that was a little advanced I trust the Michelins after that.

Most of the people here do not even know how to drive in snow because our winters are so mild most of the time...it throws everyone off their game.

Wow, that's gnarly looking! Glad to hear the F handled it well and everything went smoothly Us southerners think it's freezing when it's 50 out (like it is today)

If you have snow tires, do you still need chains?

Are snow tires capable of being on pavement? The reason i ask is snow for me is about 1 1/2 hrs away, and the drive there will not have snow.

Thanks,
Tim

With snow tires, you don't need chains. With snow mode and snow tires, the F really is a tank, has enough weight to get grip and is really stable. The traction and stability also really helps in icy conditions, pretty effortless to drive.

I plan on driving to Lake tahoe in the F. I hate how rentals are uncomfortable and weak in power. Blizzaks are the only brand for snow tires? Any specific model?

The F in snows drives like any rear wheel drive car out there which is not the best. The F even with snow tires will have difficulty negotiating an uphill climb. It actually slides all over the place. Also, going downhill and negotiating a turn, the F will scare you which is what happened to me. That is why I commended the OP's driving skills for driving 1200 miles in a Blizzard, which in my opinion, the hardest driving condition there is.

Agreed. The F is capable, but it's not great.

Snow tires are an absolute must for anyone thinking about driving their F in freezing/snowy conditions, but even my Blizzak equipped F consistently loses grip on medium inclines. Starting on an incline is big trouble.

I will take the F out in light storms, but anything serious and I commandeer the wife's SUV.
