There is a difference of 130CFM between the wet and dry AFE drop-in filters (550 vs 416). So you compromise some flow.
I believe a lot of people over clean and over oil gauze filters. Recommended cleaning is when you can't see the screen or about 30-50k miles. Gauze filters use the debris to reach cleaning efficiency.

+1 I agree completely. I have the aFe oiled drop in on my car. I also have K & N filters on 2 other cars without issue. People go crazy oiling those filters after cleaning them which lead to the oil spraying on the MAF.
i also wondered what the good/bad of thsi filter would be. i absolutely hate filters that need to be reoiled.
i purchased the tom's oem replacement filter. i havent gotten it in the mail yet.
See I was going to get Tom's too but when I called in carson toyota they said cuz its foam you have to throw the filter after 1 year. They said TOM's only lasts about one year.
See I ordered the dry filter too, but was thinkin bout exhanging it untill they scared me of damaging the MAF sensor from over oiling. Guess I am keeping the Dry filter
I have the dry and it's fine. I didn't even know the wet existed when I bought mine. I would have gotten the oil one. You shouldn't have to re-oil it until you clean it out, which is not for many many miles, so I wouldn't worry about it.
I have the dry one. I just got tired of the oiling from past K&N filters. I have not noticed any performance boost, however, I did notice a slight increase in gas mileage. I did a little experiment and noticed that the afe dry filter gave me an average .25 miles per gallon increase. Small, but it does add up and will pay for the filter in a years time as much as I drive. Plus the first time I wash the filter, I save at least 15$ from having to buy a new paper one.
I have the dry filter and like it. For less that 50 bucks it does the job and no mess with oil. Hated the K&N filters of having to oil them all the time. Plus the Oil filters are like magnets to dirt unlike dry which hits the filter and may fall off. The thing is the oil job might flow more CFM's but after it gets dirty probably not. And if you drive in dusty conditions at all an oil filter is PITA!!!
