Default IS-F shift time

A common complaint with the paddle-shift trannys is the excessive time lag between tapping the paddle and completion of the shift, a delay which reduces the sense of oneness between driver and machine. Lexus claims the IS-F will have a near F1 upshift time of 0.1 sec. I am assuming that is just the mechanical part of the shift. We don't yet know how long the electronic part of the shift will take. We may be able to get a bit of a clue from the shift times of the re-programmed paddle shift in the 2008 Vette. The official times I saw posted on a Vette board indicated the upshift speed is 0.15 sec and the total software and hardware time is less than 0.5 sec. I will be surprised if the IS-F doesn't beat the Vette total shift time by a margin that can easily be sensed by the observant driver.

Explain to me why the "electronic part" of the shift time should be anywhere close to as long as the mechanical part. We are talking about software figuring out what to do and not parts actually doing it. If anything I would expect the software to run milliseconds and the physical shift to be in hundreds of milliseconds.

electronic signals dont take long to process, its probably on the order of microseconds, negligable in terms of the mechanical shift time of 1/10th of a sec

You are aware that the paddles (and autostick) on the IS350 do not command the transmission to perform an upshift, they only permit it to do so? In essence, they set the maximum gear that the transmission can automatically select, but the transmission computer chooses when to actually upshift to that gear.

The transmission shifts will be nothing like the current IS250/350.

A predict many people will be pleasantly surprised by the IS-F's shift times and tranny response .

"Chief Engineer Yaguchi sums up the IS-F’s unique appeal in a single word: responsiveness. “It directly reflects the ‘seamless anticipation’ principle in our L-finesse philosophy. Touch any button or make a request of the IS-F, and the response will be as if the car has been waiting for you, and is ready with precisely what you need.”
