The colder air source is important. All my Acuras, BMW M2 and Mustangs the "cooler air source" was always from a "snout" than brought
air in from the grill in to the intake air box.
I haven't looked under hood yet and studied the IS 500...mine is a week, 10 days from arrival. I'm seeing warmer air being
"mixed?" with outside cooler air. Is that what's going on here??
Yes, but other air is making its way into the engine bay as well. The valve is primarily for noise more than anything else. I believe it's designed to give the car some aural enjoyment since they neuter the exhaust so much from the factory that you'll never hear any sound from the rear of the car. The valve is sequestered away into the front corner of the engine bay away from the radiator and exhaust manifolds as much as possible. You can also see where the front grille lets air in and then up through those slatted vents and then into the "cold air duct" for the intake. This almost acts as a secondary semi-sealed airbox.

Hi...interesting take on Lexus and their design reasons. My best friend, the ret. Serv. Mgr, Master Tech, was scratching his head on the why. I explained about
controlling the engine sound issue....but, he just thought it is a crazy way of doing that.
Your thoughts on it's location etc, fits a little more, than us here scratching our heads on why...why Lexus, are you drawing in hot AND cold air?? LOL!
Can't wait to get mine and dissect their "plumbing" first hand. Thanks for the pic to go with your thoughts!
WOW..that engine bay is like new!! How do you keep it so very nice??

Reason: Add words.

1. That image is from Google. Mine is a daily driver and filthy.
2. The flap gives them audio on demand. And at speed the airflow coming in through that front cold air portion may be more than the open flap let's in anyway. They already have the sound control **** on the inside of the car so obviously Lexus feels that some engine audio is wanted, but it allows drivers to floor the engine and crank the volume **** inside to get maximum volume, but allows other drivers to keep the **** and throttle input low and keep volumes low for that type of driver as well.

Oh man, that is funny! That is such a clean under hood area. Trying to compliment you!!
Yeah, I guess that whole air intake....was Lexus's crude way of working with engine sound. They just should have put
in what the LC500 uses. LOVE that V8 growl.
It makes me wonder why there hasn't been an aftermarket option that's more direct and doesn't require the cold air to do a 180 turn before going into the intake manifold....
If the point of the intake pipe is to reduce intake noise, then it would make sense for it to be a certain length. Assuming it's a tuned resonant chamber, there is an optimal length to best cancel out the noise. This is just speculation though.
[QUOTE=wthrman2;11958262]I didn't use google, just posting the real deal - I have been a long time member of this forum so they know me...
LOL!! This is like a Proof of Life picture in a kidnapping. It is the equivalent of having them hold up a newspaper with the date on it. However, having read your posts before, I know that your car has not been out in the rain and you have a killer garage/detailing area at your house. So I knew it was your car and not a stock photo. My car has not been out in the rain either and I can vouch for how much easier it is to keep clean especially under the hood.
Just didnt want our new forum member thinking I was a phony (lol)...yeah, not driving in the rain/snow is a major factor for sure
btw...don't suggest I am a proffesional kidnapper on here, trying to not blow my cover...can't tip off DLPTony when i will show at his door steps (lol)

Understood. Besides if you show up on his doorstep it will be to kidnap the car and not him. No offense to DLPTony himself.
This is a half-baked enclosure for an aftermarket CAI, I'm refering to the carbon fiber enclosure only. To execute a proper design enclosure, you have to pull the cooler air between the fender and not the air under the hood.
My comments are strictly regarding the carbon fiber enclosure only, I'm not endorsing nor rejecting this aftermarket CAI.
