Default IS 500: A Forever Car?

After spending a few years in the 2022 IS 500 (coming up on 50,000 miles), I have come to the conclusion that I would be more than content to continue to use it as my primary vehicle and not look to replacement it...Ever. Just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with the process of reconditioning a Lexus engine, particularly the V8. Also, are parts for maintenance and repair even available for Lexus models 30 to 40 years after production has ended? Thanks in advance.

^^ That is what I am planning to do also, but as you know, mine is only a summer driven car with about 3000 miles on average per year. I know low mileage is not always good on engines but I am planning to look after it the best I can and may talk to the dealer at some point and ask what are the usual components that I should be worried and maybe pre-purchase them

Me, too! I also intend for this to be my last car. I am counting on Lexus reliability and good repair capability in my location in SC. I put very few miles per year on this car. In fact, I just found out that remote start does not work if you don't drive the car for more than a week(successive ice and snow storms here).

I bought this car as a "forever car". At some point, I'll likely add something with a manual transmission to the fleet. I put 38K on my last car over 7.5 years so my intent is for this to last me a long long time.

Yes, as a matter of fact 78, so at some point you say....what will be my last car? Other than trucks, family cars, and company cars, I have had Corvette, Porsche, Jaguar, BMW, supercharged, turbocharged, and NA and I decided that this Swiss Army Knife car meets all of my needs including power and speed. I may just do a Thelma and Louise when the end is near!

I am 55, so if I drive that car for 20 years at 3 000 miles a year, that will be 60 000 miles - At 75, I may not want to drive it, or maybe I will - who knows. Keep in mind that we will have multiple cars in teh fleet anyway - Providing my health is good and I can easily get in/out of the car, then I will keep driving it

other than age i'm in a similar boat as you... i bought the 500 with the intention of it being a long term car (& also don't winter drive it to make sure it stays in great shape) & may turn into a forever car based on how the automotive market changes over the next decade or 2

when I bought my lotus a dozen years ago I had a good idea it would be a forever car (because there was nothing else like it on the market) & the longer i've owned it the less interest i have in selling it since thats been holding true. the 500 is very different, but to me still has a specialness to it. even with it not being a true F car, its still a lowish production option with one of the most sought after drive trains Lexus has ever made available. so to me the experience is a wash from the F versions (mainly because i wanted a newer/low mile sedan v8 & the is500 was the closest I could get since the ISF/GSF were discontinued). I also think most 500 owners bought the car primarily because of the engine. its special, regardless of what the F purist say about the rest of the car

My IS 500 stays with me for as long as it is humanly possible to keep it.

Mid 30s here, but I plan to keep it until at least 150-200k miles.
will be interesting to see what lexus comes out with next. I really want a v8 awd car, but who knows if any maker has that in their future plans

For me, it’s nowhere near a “forever car” because it’s 1) not manual, and 2) too big. I only require 4 seats because of kids but when the kids are old enough I imagine going down to a 2-seater. I also love cars and personally can’t imagine being “stuck” in a single car for even 10 years — unless cars keep trending the direction they are, with all the screens and lack of driver connection.

It is possibly my "for the rest of my life" car which has 13 more years to go. If I'm still around then, I will be buying an EV or hybrid with self driving features as I will be older. Possibly sooner depending on how badly I age. So in a way it's also my final ICE car.

One big factor behind my purchase was that it shared a lot of components with the other IS models so part support would be much longer. Hopefully someone identifies parts unique to this car so I can stockpile some replacements.

I'm with you - I'm just 38, but I intend to keep these V8's as long as I can. I obviously change through daily drivers etc. MY GSF. RCF, and IS500 will be something I want to keep for a very, very long time. I've had my GSF since 2017 and have only put on 25k miles since. The RCF unfortunately I have daily'd for a little and I'm about to hit 100k miles. Maybe a newer one later down the road.

I had every intention of keeping my IS500 for a long time (150k+miles or forever) before it was stolen. Was tempted to buy another but the thought of it getting stolen again and the ease of how it is being stolen just made me sick

I certainly intend to keep mine well beyond any warranty it has but after I put 100K or so on it I may consider what other options are out there. If there aren't new options that interest me more as a daily than the IS500 then I will just keep it.

Of course other changes may alter my long term ownership plans if for instance I decided to consolidate my sports car and the IS500 into one single vehicle option.
