Default windshield replacement

has anyone had to replace a windshield/windscreen before on a 500 yet? if so how much did it cost for OEM glass & was there any issues with sensor recalibration afterwards?

I got an expanding crack in mine from a rock chip that is going to require a full replacement unfortunately.

Yes, I went through insurance so I don't remember how much it costed outside of my $500 deductible. No issues with sensor recalibration.

did your insurance use safelite or a similar installer? also did they come to you to do the work or did you have to drop your car off at a shop?

thanks again for the feedback on this!

I went through a body shop and left my car with them and they had an installer come to their shop who did everything. I don't know if it was Safelite who installed it. It was OEM glass, as the body shop had a responsibility to return the car to its original condition.

Had a rock hit the ws on I-65 in KY just north of Louisville. By the time we made it to Bucees, there was a 12"crack. Called my Ins, and they automatically sent me to Safelite when I selected glass damage. I requested an OE windshield, not OEE, which had to be approved. Safelite wanted to upsell me new wipers and rainx, but I declined. $0 out of pocket. No issues with the calibration.

Do NOT allow non-OEM glass to be installed. By law, non-OEM cannot match the same quality. In some instances, the non-OEM can be up to 60% thinner! It’ll chip easier and will most likely not have the safety layer in the middle. If it doesn’t have the stamp, it’s not OEM.

so I scheduled an install with a 3rd party glass place & they are able to source OEM/Lexus glass... the quote i received was for roughly $1400 with recalibration compared to about $950 with aftermarket glass. my insurance/AllState apparently doesnt cover factory glass (only aftermarket through safelite partnership) so this will be an out of pocket deal for me (awesome huh)... anyways, just wanted to update you guys with some data in case it becomes useful to someone else

Will Allstate pay you the $950, and you pay the difference? I have State Farm, and they covered all of the cost, less my deductible...

my deductible for my fleet (4 cars) is 1k so technically both options would be out of pocket... but it helps keep my premiums lower so its a price/risk i eat for the long term savings...

its fine though, i mean truthfully/legally i dont buy insurance with the expectation that ill use it (im literally hoping opposite that if all goes well i just hemorrhage money to them every year & never have to make a claim)... which is why i want/opt for the cheapest possible monthly/yearly payments but still have a coverage net if worst case scenario happens.

so yeah kind of a weird personal situation that most others might not deal with on a typical $500 deductible. i could write a horror novel on my thoughts about insurance companies but dont want to derail this thread too much lol

^^ I do the same, I keep my deductible as high as possible because I will only make a claim when it is a significant amount.

yeah for sure, I try to keep the reoccurring costs of ownership as low as possible & having higher deductibles allows for this on my current plan... especially in my area where its against the law to not have auto insurance (even though law now seems to be a suggestion in my country, especially if you're a billionaire or friends with one, but I digress). its a balance of trying to do the right thing while also covering my own *** in case of emergency. the joys of insurance!

anyways, ill try & give a more detailed breakdown of the cost once i have the new glass installed & have a receipt in my hand so people can get an idea of what the costs are from an install/parts/recalibration standpoint.

my biggest concern for going with the more expensive Lexus glass was wanting to retain the OEM quality but also reading other peoples experience of aftermarket glass warping over time or increasing road noise (because of it being too thin). initially was going to go with the cheaper aftermarket but decided to get the Lexus replacement after reading some of those stories from other Lexus owners.

just replaced Lexus ES350 windshield, $960.00 same at 3 different local companies. My comp did not cover as have $1000 deductible, glass coverage was separate which i will now purchase, i think it was an additional $115 a year, not bad.

I did replace mine and I would 100% go with OEM from the dealer.. I went the Lexus version through Safelite and I a disappointed to say the least. The sensors and such work perfectly fine, but the glass is not smooth. You can see some ripples in the glass right at eye level. The passengers dont notice but I do. So, I would say get the one from the dealer because I gotta figure they wouldn't be ok with the quality of the crappy knock off... I tried taking a picture but it doesnt show up
