I have a 2018 3IS with navigation. I have never updated the system firmware. When I go to the Lexus site (https://www.lexus.com/firmware-updates) it says there is an update available, but from Nov 2016. So the question: is it actually newer? And will I notice any difference if I install?
So ironically there is another thread that someone asked the exact same question, I believe for the exact same year vehicle.
The answer is both yes and no.
Yes the update will be newer than what is in the vehicle. Lexus will not let you downgrade the firmware, or install the incorrect firmware. There is a checking mechanism that prevents the wrong/older firmware from being installed.
The website says Nov. 2016 because that was the first firmware update...but there were more after that.
They likely updated the firmware file you download, but didn't update the release date on the website.
It would have been part of a service bulletin, which they never update the date, but rather revise the content.
You can download and install it. Without actually seeing the bulletin the firmware file on the website is either newer, or the newest version.
If your Navi is working without any issues then the answer is no.
The firmware update is to address certain operational issues, not to add other functionality.
