Default Honest opinion on 3.5 IS rear

Why does this look so off and bad to me? No hate to new IS's but do people really think this rear end looks good? Looks straight up awkward and bulky. Maybe it's the rear diffuser?

I think the front and side profile is really good, just the rear.

Truthfully I think it’s all about the color. Grecian water makes any car look hideous lol. Jk

But in all honesty, the pictures don’t do it justice. When the car was announced back in 2020 I said it was hideous. Now look at me now. I bought one. The styling is gorgeous in person. And for me, the rear is accentuated by the wide hips on the quarter panel. Also, if you get the Carbon Fiber spoiler the curve on the spoiler is more drastic than the regular spoiler and it adds to the lines of the car.

I will be honest that when I was looking at the pics of the rear before I bought mine, I felt the same way. Even looking at the pic you just posted made me cringe because in real life, it doesnt visually look like that, or maybe it's because I never laid on the ground to look at it from that angle but I assure you the rear looks better in person because it has 3 dimensional features that pics can't catch

^ I agree with that. I don't think the rear of the 3.5 photographs very well. As Swaangin mentioned, the rear diffuser can look a bit bulky depending on the angle. First rear picture/s of the 3.5 that I liked was of a black one. The diffuser hides well on the black... But I find it doesn't look as big/awkward in person anyways.

Also, I found this white one where the person painted over some of the diffuser to give it the illusion of being a bit smaller than it actually is.

Agreed... for me, I wasn't entirely sold on the rear either, but the rest of the car made up for any downsides on the rear. Plus, it's one of those cars that works so much better in person. Since mine is in silver, too, it kinda looks like "a Lexus" if someone sees it in their peripheral vision. Last night my wife and I went to a New Year's party and took the Lexus, and a dude who has literally already seen my car before was like "Sheesh, what year is this?"

The car also hits differently at night since your eyes are drawn to the taillights that run the full-width of the rear.

The back is Prius like for sure. The Grecian water doesn’t help either. The car looks much better in person though because nobody looks at the rear straight on and below trunk level, except the annoying creepy toddler in the driveway of car commercials about to get backed into.

This?

You take that back!

But seriously, putting images into my brain that I can't un-see is not a good start to the new year. lol

Yes exactly. Even the way the taillights flare onto the side of the car is nearly identical, same shape and gloss black trim.

Thanks for posting that picture. Previously I liked the idea of the full width tail light, but this implementation, with everything combined, looks like either a botched plastic surgery operation, or a bad case of hemorrhoids.

The rear certainly does not photo well because the 3D curves and angles appear flat and blocky on a 2D photo. The rear looks better in person, but it’s still awkward looking because of the massive step down from the trunk to the rear quarter panels like the BMW E60 5 and E65 7 series.

Looks are subjective but it looks fine to me. Best looking sports sedan on the market right now in my opinion.

While I'm glad to see Lexus take some design risks, it's controversial to me. I like the middle part and love the lighting treatment. I don't like the piano black diffuser and trunk. The trunk reminds me of BMW 7 series with 'Bangle butt"

I pulled this picture from Reddit but as you guys took pictures from different angles, I can see what you guys are saying, doesn't look bad. I think the photo was just taken at a bad angle. That blue color looks stunning though, it reminds me of the blue color in the M line for BMW's.

I agree. The rear is one of the best attributes as well with its wide stance and muscular lines.
