DHP BBS Wheels - Owners please chime in
Hi everyone,
I am sorry for starting a new thread but I don't recall seeing a specific thread on the matter, but I am sorry if that has already been created. I am seriously considering the IS500 Launch Edition and one of my concern is the care required for the matte finish BBS wheels. My car will never see any rain or adverse weather so they'll never get dirty other than dusty from driving or brake dust. With my current painted wheels on my 2021 IS350 F Sport (not the chrome finish like in the US), cleaning the wheels are very easy, just apply a bit of water and dry with a synthetic chamois and I'm done.
With a matte finish, could I simply just use a rag with non-silicone cleaner and be done with it? From what I have seen online, it seems pretty simple but was curious from IS350 F Sport with the DHP on how owners find looking after these wheels truly is...a PITA or easy?
Thanks in advance...

While I can't speak of the DHP wheels specifically, I have had several sets of matte black wheels before on other vehicles. I always used a non acid, low degreaser formula, cleaner and simple PH Neutral soap that I use as my car wash. Never had any streaking or fading or anything of the like. I don't ever use harsh cleaners on wheels, learned my lesson back in the day on some polished wheels one time. They streaked really bad, cut into the clear, and I wound up having to have them professionally cut and polished.
With the car usage you are gonna do, you won't really need a "wheel cleaner", just use the same soap as you wash the car with, but with a wheel dedicated mitt.
Worst case, I've had good luck with Sonax Wheel Cleaner on my winter wheels, but never needed on my summer set!

^^ Maybe I can use the same soap I use when I have my bubble bath? If its delicate enough for my parts, it must be safe for the wheels (LMAO)
Thanks for those that ave chimed in so far - you guys are great

Sorry Bud! Yea, like Answer said, you probably won't need a cleaner at all as much as yours will get driven. But if you get the LE I definitely am going to have to see some pics. The only reason I would even consider it is the color. That is 100% my most favorite color! I know it's played out and been on everything. But I don't care. Toyota ruined me when they came out with Cement on the Tacoma. And my Daughter drives a Cement Corolla Apex now, so...

Just kidding... I haven't had any matte black wheels yet, so I have little to add. With you in mind, my main concerns would be -
- use a gentle soap, i.e. car wash soap
- use a soft towel/mitt for cleaning them
- cleaning them often enough to prevent build-up of brake dust/rust.
^^ LMAO - I got scared for a sec!!
I am curious, would drying them with a synthetic chamois leave streaks? and by streaks, I mean like dull the finish or make is non homogeneous. Can't describe it well....but you know

I doubt it, as long as you actually DRY it... As in, leaving behind no residue. I don't know that the type of towel would impact that so much, but I am also not a detailing guru by any means. Maybe someone can chime in who is more knowledgeable about the technical stuff.
Wthrman2, another thing you could look at, if you wanted to really preserve them, is to ceramic coat or graphene coat them. You would definitely want a professional to do it and it might cost a lil, but for sure worth it in the end. If you go this route, any type of wheel cleaner is a no no, unless it is PH- or PH Balanced, and most wheel cleaners aren't. I have done ceramic coating on a couple of our cars before, and it's worth it. I haven't done it lately, but I wish I would have.
As for drying them with a chamois, no, that wouldn't streak them. But keep in mind, unless you dry them completely with some sort of forced air to remove the water from the lug holes and the backside of the wheel, you can't get them completely dry. I use this . Or if I am in a hurry I use my leaf blower. It does the job just fine and it's cordless...
