There were no cars around me. I was driving down the highway at 60, out of no where I hear a huge boom like a bomb going off. Luckily I had the sunroof interior cover closed, the sunroof had exploded. I had never heard of this until I googled that it is a thing. What are my options?? Would the entire sunroof need replacing? Would it be a good idea to call Lexus?? Insurance?
I've heard of this before. Unfortunately you're probably going to have to go through insurance to have it fixed. But you'll be scared forever. If it happens again I would sell the car.
Yep this is a relatively common failure unfortunately, the glass was not tempered correctly. It is rare but at one time unheard of. Does anyone know if the replacements have been revised or do they use the identical glass panel? I think Lexus should be forced to recall all of them no matter the age of the vehicle.
Yikes!! Maybe i am happy my is500 wont be available with a sunroof. I know hyundai had issues with their pano roof, but 1st time reading about a lexus product

Glad you are OK! Today my 2021 Lexus IS 350 F Sport sunroof shattered and exploded while I was driving on the highway at normal speeds. No sign of a rock or object, I wasn’t driving under an underpass! Just a very loud explosion and then I could hear wind from above, which then told me my sunroof shattered. I reported to NHTSA. It is currently at the Lexus dealer under evaluation, to determine if it’s covered under my warranty. I also filed a claim with my insurance. This is more prevalent than I thought! Definitely think it’s due to defective tempered glass?

100%. Properly tempered glass can take fairly large stones and not shatter, you can even chip them without complete failure. My next door neighbour has a Sienna with a chip in the rear glass (it's pretty big) it didn't shatter.

Yes, this is what I thought thank you. I will come back with this if the dealer tries to say it wasn’t a sunroof defect!

If my Camry can go 36 years without the roof blowing up there is no excuse. And it was a farm car for awhile lol.
It comes down to statistics, nothing is 100% perfect from any factory...there will always be a small amount of defect parts that get into the supply chain.

Appreciate the point, but this looks like a cost savings measure. The same 36 year old car has the original windshield it has no cracks, rock chips never spread. It is possible to make highly durable glass auto makers choose not to.
