Engine revs super loud for less than a minute than quiets down

I have the car straight piped basically and when I start the car it's super obnoxious. All my neighbors hate me for it, but after maybe 20-30 seconds (high 1000RPM?), it quiets down on it's own. In the summer time it's not nearly as bad but now it's getting colder, had a family member start my car and it was just way too loud. Why does the car do that and is there a way to turn it off thru techstream? Sometimes I find myself shifting into drive as soon as the car starts to shut the engine up because when I go into drive, the revs drop to below 1000 rpm.. feel like I might be damage the car by doing this.

That is cold start fast idle...as you noted, now that it's getting colder it's worse because the RPM's are higher.
Wait til it actually is the dead of winter...if you think it's bad now, you're in for a special treat.
There's no way to turn this off cause there's nothing to turn off, that's the computer trying to warm up a cold engine. Any and every car with a fuel powered engine will do this.

Shifting to Drive will quiet it a fair bit cause you're putting load on the engine...it's not the end of the world, but I'm sure it's not the best thing for the car either in the long run.

You could try a block heater...maybe if the engine is somewhat warm the cold start fast idle won't be as high...but the car is still going to be loud either way.
Or you could put the mufflers back on at least...that will help a lot.

Even stock, it's noticeably louder and more "boomy" at idle for the first 15-20 seconds. If I start the car and then have to go grab something from the trunk, for instance, it's a very loud time lol. Most cars do this to protect the engine while it's cold and to get it up to temp quickly. Many cars I've driven have an even more noticeable cold start volume difference. In particular I remember the Macan Turbo being super grumpy on cold start.

Learn to live with it or don't run it straight piped! It's normal like already mentionned and can't be avoided.

Normal car stuff just being amplified through your loud pipez. Likely emissions controls making the car extra boomy. Pretty much every car known to mankind in the past 15 years or so (even longer) does this in the morning. Honestly just return the pipes to stock.

"Filmed in Mexico."

At first I thought you were just trying to reach triple digits, but then it kept going. Sheesh.

That (highlighted part) actually made me laugh out. A treat indeed. Your neighbors probably dislike you now, but they will definitely hate you as it gets colder out. Lol

I understand you were filming that with one hand... but... you drove like a douchebag in clip. I hope that wasn't a showcase of your regular driving style. Enjoying your car doesn't mean you have to be an A-hole to everyone else on the road. Please be more careful out there.

^ Agree. If you're going to go fast, I suggest at least getting away from traffic - driving is unfortunately more about dealing with your surroundings and other drivers than it is about your own "skill". At any point, one of the other drivers could fail to see you, especially when you're traveling at double the speed limit. Hence I like to find empty back roads for spirited driving. Even then, I have never gone over 100 in my car, I'll just leave it at that - and that's with my IS 350 having 100 more horsepower. Not worth the risk of damage or tickets IMO.

Anyway, I would like to return to the topic of this thread, but I felt it was necessary to respond.

It was earlier in the day with minimum traffic, wasn't cutting close or making anyone slam their brakes, just for fun

^^ I don't mean any disrespect, I know you are a long time contributor here but I am just curious....What is to gain by straight piping your IS250? I mean I understand that a more throatier exhaust can make it more intoxicating for the driver however, why wouldn't you invest into an aftermarket exhaust that will augment the stock sound of the 250 while not sounding like someone's exhaust just fell off and alienate your neighbors. Unless there is something else I am missing...

No prob. Doesn't make sense to spend over $1000 for no horsepower gain. Muffler / resonator delete combo sounds exactly like the invidia q300 catback w/ the midpipe. Same sound for $250 and no issues with emissions / inspections. Only issue I have with it is the start up, not the drive.

An exhaust system will not fix the problem I have with the neighbors either

^^ Gotcha - I am not much of a mod guy so I wasn't quite sure about your situation. It seems you got an invidia q300 through a cheap alternative (lol). Can't help you with the neighbors...I am lucky I have great ones
